The German developer Tone2 Audio has published Nemesis 3, a major update for its innovative neoFM Synthesizer plugin for macOS and Windows.
In 2023, Tone2 Audio released a major 3.0 update for its Nemesis neoFM Synthesizer plugin. Neo, because it offers a different, more modern approach to FM synthesis.
Three years have passed since this event, and now update 3.1 for Nemesis 3 is available for download.
Update 3.1
The new update, 3.1, is free for existing Tone2 Nemesis 3 users. It doesn’t add any significant new synthesis features, but it does improve the sound engine in many areas.
This includes a significantly enhanced sound quality when 22kHz, 44kHz, 88kHz, or 176kZ is used as the DAW’s samplerate. In all these settings, the synth performs with reduced aliasing (up to 20dB less).
Tone2 also promises that the chords now sound better when “Fat1” or “very clean” is used as the micro-tuning mode.
Also, the built-in reverb FX processors (Ultra, Big, Infinity, Plate, Trance, Glass, Large) got a major makeover, offering better quality and more depth. There are also some new features:
- easy to see soundsets in the patch browser (now in blue)
- template patches have a grey color in the patch browser.
- enhanced graphics
- reworked the background skin. Diodes and displays have color bleeding.
- the keyboard has softer shadows.
- reduced noise and glitches.
Alongside this, there are other enhancements. Nemesis 3.1 is downward compatible with all previous versions. Existing song projects and patches can be loaded without any further steps necessary. They will benefit from the enhanced sound quality.

FM synthesis has long been considered one of the most complicated and uninspiring forms of synthesis. Thanks to new concepts in recent years, frequency modulation synthesis has become significantly more accessible and simple. See Korg opsix.
A development team that also does this is Tone2 from Germany with the Nemesis. They call it neoFM, and it’s about simplifying the main FM structure. New innovative forms of FM synthesis have also emerged from this mission. Now Tone2 celebrates version 3 of their synth plugin with Nemesis 3.
Tone2 Audio Nemesis 3
Nemesis 3 is a major update with new features and improvements. First of all, Tone2 has revised the whole graphic aspect of the plugin, so GUI, and more. Including:
- GUI with 22 different sizes (with and without keys and scaling from 66% up to 300% by clicking in the lower right corner.
- Native support for WQHD, 4K, 5K, and 8K UHD displays.
- reworked and enhanced graphics.
- support for hardware-acceleration.
- ultrasharp graphics with enhanced HiDpi and Retina Display support.
- automatic detection of the ideal GUI size.
- completely rewritten GUI code.
- more contrast for the LCD displays.
- the animations are faster and smoother.
- fine-tuned some coordinates in the interface.
- re-sizing the VST3, Standalone, and Audio Unit works more reliable.
- fine-tuned some colors.
- more responsive controls.
- A warning is shown when the user selects a GUI-size that is too large for the screen.
The built-in patch browser also got a makeover. It can now be opened by clicking “browser” or the display on the upper left. The keyboard is now also animated when the patch browser is open and broken, and badly designed patches are fixed automatically.
Improved Engine
Then there are improvements in the engine. However, no new features or synthesis options.
- enhanced performance and stability
- most parts of the audio engine now use 64-bit precision instead of 32-bit, which results in a higher sound-quality
- higher quality resampling in 44 and 88 kHz sample rate.
- more precise pitch calculation.
- slightly enhanced sound of the automatic micro-tuning.
- many subtle enhancements.
Further, you can explore 100 new professionally-designed production-ready patches and new patterns in the arpeggiator modules. According to Tone2, they also removed the demo version timeout and added a voice-over. I don’t know if that’s a better demo restriction, hehe. And of course, it also includes bug fixes.
7 years ago I was able to test the first version of Nemesis Synthesizer and made two sound demo videos. The plugin will sound even better today as the engine has been refined over the past 7 years.
First Impression
No WOW update as it has no real new features. It’s more of a maintenance update with improvements to the UI, sound engine, and some new sounds.
Demanding € 39 for the update is perhaps a bit too much, since you don’t get any major new features for that price. But much of that is published by many other developers as a free maintenance update. But Tone2 is a small developer and he also wants to live. So understandable.
Tone2 Nemesis 3 is available now for $99/99€, and existing users can upgrade for $39/39€. It runs as a VST, VST3, an AU plugin on macOS (Intel + native Apple Silicon support) and Windows.
