Dusk Audio DuskVerb is a free multimode algorithmic reverb plugin for macOS, Linux, and Windows with freeze and more.
The last two weeks have been very eventful, especially in the effects area. Dozens of effect plugins have been released, including the Arturia FX Collection 6 or the comeback of the Inear Display plugins as donationware.
There’s also something intriguing to try out this weekend. Dusk Audio has released DuskVerb, a new cross-platform free algorithmic reverb plugin with plenty of creative features.
Dusk Audio DuskVerb
DuskVerb is a free algorithmic reverb for macOS, Linux, and Windows. According to Dusk Audio, DuskVerb covers everything from tight rooms to infinite ambient washes.
At its core, DuskVerb uses a 16-channel Hadamard feedback delay network to build dense, natural-sounding reverb tails. Plus, it uses Dattorro-inspired diffusion stages to smooth everything into a lush, coherent wash.
You don’t notice much of this because the stars of the reverb are someone else. It features five distinct algorithms, each with its own delay line configuration and default character: plate, hall, chamber (sits between hall and room), room, and ambient.
The latter is designed for big ethereal washes with long decay times and heavy modulation. Each algorithm is fully customizable with a wide range of parameters.
It starts with the input section, where you can set the tempo-syncable pre-delay and the diffusion, which controls how dense the tail is. Then, you can tweak the reverb decay (0.2s to 30s) and the reverb size.
In the same section, you also have a freeze function with which you can sustain the current tail indefinitely while muting new input. The reverb tone is shapable in the character section with the bass multiply, treble multiply, and crossover parameters.
Modulation is also onboard and infuses movement to the tail, giving you from subtle movement up to chorus-like shimmer effects. The early reflections are also tweakable with dedicated level and size controls.
Further, you have an output EQ with low- and high-cut controls to shape the reverb’s frequency range, a dry/wet mix, and a stereo width control that goes up to 200%. Bus Mode sets the mix to 100% wet for send/return setups.
Dusk Audio DuskVerb supports automation and ships with 25 factory presets across nine categories.
First Impression
At first glance, a great-sounding, free cross-platform reverb plugin. The generous parameter range makes it very versatile. Freeze and modulation are very welcome. The quality isn’t high-end, but it’s very usable
Dusk Audio DuskVerb is available now as a free download. It runs as a VST3, AU, and LV2 plugin on macOS (native Apple Silicon + Intel), Linux, and Windows.
