Korg iWavestation: the AUv3 plugin update for the Wavestation emulation for iOS

Korg iWavestation is an authentic emulation of the Korg Wavestation from 1990 for iPad, and the new 1.2 update adds AUv3 plugin support.

When Korg released the iWavestation for iOS in 2016, the AUv3 format was not yet created. Mobile musicians used technologies such as AudioBus or Inter-App Audio to combine apps, but only in a single instance. Nowadays, it’s standard on iOS, and an app that doesn’t support it is almost a reason not to buy it.

Korg is among the slowest companies to update its apps to support AUv3. But hey, progress has been made. Today, the big news: iWavestation, the excellent emulation of the Korg Wavestation, now also supports AUv3.

It’s been more than a year since Korg quietly updated the M1 emulation iM1 with AUv3. Now, just before Christmas, the Korg iWavestation also benefits from the AUv3 plugin support.

This offers the significant advantage of running multiple instances of the app, which was previously available only in Korg Gadget 3.

This means the iWavestation app joins a group of other Korg apps that now support it. As a reminder, the AUv3-ready Korg apps are iWavestation, iM1, Electribe Wave, Korg Gadget 3, and Korg Module Pro.

Korg, if you’re reading this: please continue, but please speed things up a bit, otherwise it will soon be 2035, and AUv3 will be outdated again, and you still won’t have updated all the apps.

The new 1.2 update is a free update for existing users. The app is now available for $17,99 instead of $35,99 during the Holiday Sale on the Apple App Store.

It runs as a standalone app and AUv3 plugin on iOS (iPadOS, iPhone, and iPod Touch).

Update

Article from November 2016

Teasing is over. Korg has today released the iWavestation, an emulation of the legendary Wavestation wave-sequencing synthesizer for iPad, iPhone, and the Gadget app.

The GUI is beautifully done and will be my next purchase, and for many other synth lovers. If this continues, we will have all the classic Korg plugins on iOS.

The WAVESTATION synthesizer appeared in 1990 with its new “advanced vector synthesis system” which combined and shifted between multiple complex waveforms. The user could operate a joystick to “mix” or “morph” between four oscillators selected from the large onboard collection of waveforms.

With iWavestation, Korg says that it has ‘evolved the operability’ of the Wavestation from the Korg Legacy Collection. The original editing structure has been preserved, while giving you a redesigned graphical user interface that takes advantage of the intuitive operation possible with iPad.

This new instrument includes a stupendous number of presets and waveforms, covering all models of the series: WAVESTATION, WAVESTATION EX, WAVESTATION A/D, and WAVESTATION SR.

The six option PCM and program cards that were highly acclaimed by users at the time, as well as the KLC card that was newly added with the KORG Legacy Collection, are also included for a total of seven, bringing the total to more than 1,500 preset sounds, more than 700 waveforms, and 55 effects, and giving you virtually infinite possibilities for creating sounds. Features

    • An evolved Wavestation sound
    • New graphical WAVE SEQUENCE operation
    • 1,500 sounds, including the option PCM/Program cards
    •  Interoperable with the Original Wavestation

KORG iWavestation is available now for an introductory price of 17,99€, down from 34,99€. It runs on iOS (iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch).

  1. Yep, this update showed up on my iPad Pro as well…
Finally I can use it on my iPad not only in Korg Gadget but Cubase and Logic as well 😀

  2. Been waiting for this for such a long time that it almost doesn’t matter, anymore.
The original app is one which really got me into iPad musicking. For some reason, it really grabbed me, at the time. Had heard about it on a podcast and it made me realize that the device I had in my hands could be way more useful.
Not long after that, I started focusing on AUv3. At one point, I had pretty much AUv3 plugin available. And I’d do a lot with them. Also accumulated desktop plugins, though they were less prominent in my setup.
Gadget for Mac came out with plugins, and that was useful. Eventually upgraded to Gadget 3, with updated versions of these plugins… as well as Korg Collection, with a more elaborate version of Wavestation. Been using these in Bitwig Studio while missing out on these things when using my iPad Pro.

When Logic Pro for iPad came out, I’ve started switching to Apple’s DAW, with some cross-platform compatibility. Plugins which work on both Mac and iPad are so useful in that context!

Now, what would be much more useful is if this synth supported MPE (or even MIDI 2.0, which is still not making a splash six years after official adoption). There are few MPE synths which work on both iPad and Mac. GeoShred is a remarkable one. Imaginando and Audio Damage have a couple (DRC, FRMS, Quanta, Continua). Korg would do well, here. And MPE makes so much sense for these classic sounds.

So, this would be great news to my 2019 self. Now, it leaves me wanting for more.
