Herbs and Stones Soft Memo: a patchable desktop stereo hybrid multi-FX unit

Herbs and Stones Soft Memo is a new semi-modular, patchable stereo hybrid multi-FX unit with eight unique algorithms and built-in modulation.

Working modularly doesn’t always mean patching a Synthesizer or drum voice. You can also work modularly with effects, which can be just as exciting. For those who struggle to find the right FX modules, there are also semi-modular solutions.

Herbs and Stones has just released the Soft Memo, a fully patchable creative stereo FX unit.

Herbs and Stones Soft Memo

Soft Memo is a new desktop stereo multi-FX unit that differs from traditional processors not only visually. Its striking black-and-white design fits seamlessly into the existing Herbs and Stones product line.

This is definitely not your average multi-FX processor. Why? Because it has a special set of algorithms, analog ingredients, and is heavily patchable, something you almost never find in effects boxes except in Eurorack modules.

Soft Memo features two audio channels (A & B). In each channel, an integrated feedback path with an analog VCA and resonant analog low-pass filter allows you to mix processed audio back into the input stage.

Each channel feeds into the central FX section, consisting of eight inspiring algorithms. It’s a multi-FX processor, but only one algorithm can be used across both channels at a time, alongside the analog ingredients.

You can choose from:

  • Twin Gorge – dual drifting delay
  • Faux Mirrors – Lo-Fi reverse time processor
  • Empty Shell – shimmer feedback delay
  • Fixed Thoughts – double-pitched freeze reverb
  • Grotto Divide – stereo crossfade reverb
  • Rival Choir – freeform stereo chorus
  • Moon Swings – drifting stereo pitch shifter
  • Late Rings – dual stereo ring modulator + tempo offset.

Three parameters per algorithm let you manually fine-tune the effect to your preference. There are also dedicated dry and wet level knobs.

Patch The Effects Madness

The real magic of the Soft Memo happens with its 25 patch points. Like a semi-modular synthesizer, you can control the parameters not only manually but also with CV.

To this end, Herbs and Stones has incorporated various modulators, including two complex voltage-controlled LFOs with clock division and phase offset control with multiple outputs, as well as an envelope follower.

The latter is an excellent addition, as it can adjust parameters in step with your audio’s amplitude, creating highly dynamic and interactive results.

Alternatively, you can patch your favorite Eurorack modulation sources into the Soft Memo in case you need more flexibility. Yes, the multi-FX supports Eurorack.

Herbs and Stones Soft Memo backside

On the back, it has 6.3mm mono in/out connectors for each channel (A & B), allowing you to work with stereo and mono signals.

For processing mono signals, turn the A-to-B switch on, and the engine aligns channel B’s wet, dry, and input level to those of channel A, ensuring even balance at both outputs.

Soft Memo is powered by a 9V center-negative (500 mA) power supply.

First Impression

Multi-FX processors for synthesizers seem to be a hot topic right now. Making the whole thing hybrid and patchable is very lovely in my opinion. The Soft Memo’s algorithms sound beautifully experimental and unique in the initial demos.

A bit like Bastl Instruments’ FX Wizard, but larger and with only one algorithm at a time, which is a shame. But the analog filter and feedback circuit on each side, makes it very tempting.

Herbs and Stones Soft Memo is now available for pre-order at $629/€569.
