Steffen Marienberg, co-founder of the German modular Synthesizer company Marienberg Devices, has passed away.
Today is a great day, full of new synthesizers from Machine Bristonica 2025. But there’s also some sad news, sorry.
I’ve received the news that Steffen Marienberg passed away in August 2025. He was the co-founder of Marienberg Devices, a German company that built 5U modular synthesizers.

Marienberg Devices is a German company that has been on the market for many years. Probably unfamiliar or less of a topic to many, but for musicians working in the 5U world, its modules are best-known.
The highlight product from Steffen and Holger Marienberg is the Marienberg Modular System, which he has been developing for 10 years. It’s not a Moog Modular clone/replica, but features original circuits and designs.
The Tuesday Night Machines YouTube channel conducted an interview with Holger Marienberg on the Thomann Synth Reactor event that I organised back in 2019.
Here is what the family shared:
“We are sad that we have lost you. We are grateful that we were able to live with you. Steffen Marienberg *September 30, 1961 +August 19, 2025 In silent mourning: his Sigrid, his brother Holger, and all relatives. Alterode, August 2025. The funeral service, followed by the urn burial, will take place on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at the Hoym cemetery.
It’s sad news, and it’s another loss for the 5U synth community. Last year, just before Superbooth, Gert Jalass, developer of the Moon Modular systems, left us very unexpectedly.
Whether Holger Marienberg will continue to lead the company or not is unknown.

Diese Nachricht macht mich sehr traurig. Steffen ist von uns viel zu früh gegangen. Er wäre nächstes Jahr 65 geworden. Ich habe ihn vor knapp 35 Jahren kennengelernt als er sein Muikgeschaft in Hettstedt eröffnet hatte. Habe bei ihm meinen ersten Sampler gekauft und viele sehr interessante Gespräche mit ihm gehabt. Ruhe in Frieden Steffen.
