Rob Jackson Flangell, Phasell, and PolyDelay are three new, powerful yet super affordable AUv3 effects for iOS/macOS.
I recently published a list of all iOS synthesizers that also run as macOS AUv3 plugins at no extra cost. There are also many effects processors that you can use on macOS. Some of them are real gems. For me, these include the apps by Rob Jackson.
The apps will probably never win any awards with their GUI, but they offer a lot, sound excellent, and all for next to nothing. Within a month, Rob Jackson has released three beautiful new effects apps (Flangell, Phasell, and PolyDelay that run on iOS and macOS and cost as much as a pint of beer.
Rob Jackson Flangell, Phasell, and PolyDelay
The most recent of the three is FlangeII, a dual stereo flanger for iOS and macOS with AUv3 support. According to Rob Jackson, Flangell can produce all manner of swirly modulated goodness by running the independent flanging engines in parallel or series.
At its core are two independent flangers for the left and right channels, with added LFOs 90 degrees out of phase for a stereo effect.
Alongside parallel, series, and stereo configurations, the plugin offers four selectable modes, each with a different flavor, ranging from subtle (I) to extreme (IV).
You can fine-tune the effect with rate and depth controls on each side, plus bring in spice and analog-style warmth with the built-in overdrive parameter. There is also a dry/wet mix control.
Just before FlangeII, Rob Jackson released PhaseII, a new dual stereo phaser plugin for iOS and macOS with AUv3 support.
At the FlangeII core are two independent phasers for the left and right channels. Like Flangell, it can run in stereo, parallel, and serial and offers four distinct modes. They range from subtle to extreme.
Each phaser engine can be tweaked using the rate and depth controls. Rate sets the rate of the phaser LFO in Hz, while depth sets the depth of the phase effect.
There are also global parameters like the stereo width, an optional warm overdrive, and a dry/wet mix.
Rob Jackson promises that PhaseII can produce all manner of swirly modulated goodness.
PolyDelay
Third and last of the recent releases is PolyDelay, which joins the PhaseII and FlangeII. PolyDelay is a stereo dual-line/polyrhythmic delay processor for iOS and macOS with AUv3 plugin support.
The effect calculates delay times based on a BPM (beats per minute) tempo, and the polyrhythmic notation of D:B, where D = divisions and B = beats. You can modify these parameters (beats, division) for each channel independently.
It also includes a BPM control and a clock multiplier with half, normal, and double options.
Additionally, you can shape the tone with a variable stereo width, a high- and lowpass filter, stereo modulation, and a limiter. Of course, there is also a dry/wet mix control.
PolyDelay can perform all the delay duties you’d expect from it. If you delve deeper and work with more odd divisions and beats, you can achieve creative delay effects that go into the polyrhythmic fields.
All three effects have a built-in preset manager that allows you to save your parameters quickly.
First Impression
Three beautifully implemented AUv3 effects for iOS and macOS. All three offer a sophisticated feature set that allows for a wide range of sounds.
Rob Jackson Flangell, Phasell, and PolyDelay are available now on the Apple App Store for $1,99/1,99€. They run as a standalone app and AUv3 FX plugin on macOS (Apple Silicon only) and iOS.
