Excite Audio Evolve Velvet is a new hybrid morphing Synthesizer plugin that is inspired by the character of Velvet.

Last August, Excite Audio introduced the Evolve series, based around a hybrid morphing Synthesizer with synthesis and sample playback. The first release was the Evolve Alloy, a Synthesizer designed for metallic sounds.

Today, I welcome the second release. Excite Audio has released Evolve Velvet, a new Synthesizer instrument inspired by the smooth and luxurious character of Velvet.

Excite Audio Evolve Engine

Evolve Velvet uses the same synthesizer engine as the Evolve Alloy but with different oscillator content and macro effects.

As a reminder, Excite Audio Evolve Velvet and Alloy offers four morphable source layers with either sample playback with sample import option or classic subtractive synthesis.

Each sound source can be modified with a handful of classic parameters like pitch, tone, pan, velocity, and more. Then, it has a multi-FX section with dual filters, and 16 effects modules, including saturation, feedback, delay, reverb, modulation, phaser, pitch drift, and more

On the modulation table, you can find twelve mod sources including six ADSRs with delay and hold, two LFOs with retriggering and offset options, velocity, and advanced keytracking. As a bonus, you can also use the X and Y positions of the X/Y pad as a modulation source.

A drag-and-drop system makes mapping modulations a breeze, and a modulation matrix handles and gives you a perfect overview of all the assignments.

Excite Audio Evolve Velvet

Unlike Evolve Alloy, Excite Audio Evolve Velvet features over 250 new sound sources ranging from felt pianos and classic electric keyboards to timeless strings and sought after classic synths from the 70’s and 80’s

The result is a smooth, expressive sound palette that ranges from acoustic and intimate through to lush, rich electric tones that provide a vintage quality into your music, say the developers.

Also new are the four macro effects that have been crafted specially to shape the output of Velvet. First, you can reduce the sound’s transient and harsh frequencies with the Soften macro.

Then, Warmth applies subtle saturation and gentle harmonics while Sway adds wow and flutter pitch modulation. Finally, Hazy applies a characterful Lo-Fi hall reverb. Good, they can be run either before or after the main FX modules.

Excite Audio ships the plugin with 250 plugins that covers a wide range of sounds.

First Impression

It’s nice to see that the series is being continued. However, I find it a shame that you have to install a new plugin each time they expand the series.

It would be nicer and more elegant if they use libraries that can be loaded into a central Evolve plugin, so you don’t have to install the same plugin with minor engine changes over and over again.

Excite Audio Evolve Velvet is available now for an introductory price of 39€ instead of 59€. It runs as a VST, VST3, AU, and AAX plugin on macOS (native Apple Silicon + Intel) and Windows.

A Lite version, crossgrade/upgrade, and bundles are also available at a discount during the promotion.
