Tiagolr Reev-R, Gate-12, Time-12, and Filt-R are new open-source, free, cross-platform effects plugins with plenty of modulation.
Early this year, developer Tiagolr released Ripplerx, an open-source, free physical modeling Synthesizer heavily inspired by the AAS Chromaphone 1 and 2.
The developer hasn’t gone on a development vacation since then. In addition to bug fixes for Ripplerx, Tiagolr has been working on a new effects suite with four plugins: Reev-R, Gate-12, Time-12, and Filt-R. Yes, they are open-source and free of charge.
Tiagolr REEV-R
Four new JUCE-based effect plugins are available for free download, and they run on macOS, Linux, and Windows. Tiagolr REEV-R is a new convolution reverb with built-in modulation for pre/send and post/volume signals.
According to the developer, REEV-R is based on the high-performance convolution reverb engine from the KlangFalter library. A downer but not a problem is that the plugin does not come with impulse response files. Don’t worry, the internet is full of these files. Alternatively, you can download the files the developer has linked on GitHub.
Once loaded, REEV-R offers unique features to creatively manipulate your convolution reverbs. First, you can mangle the IR files with parameters such as stretch, trim, reverse, delay, attack, and decay.
The plugin’s strength is its built-in modulation engine. that features a powerful multi-segment envelope generator for modulating the pre/send and post/reverb parameters. You can use pre-defined envelope shapes or use the paint mode to create user shapes.
Neat, you can trigger up to 12 patterns by MIDI notes or alternatively using the audio trigger mode. Randomizers and sequencers provide anyone seeking something a little wilder with even more sound design options. There are also optional envelope followers for the send and reverb.
Tiagolr Gate-12
In addition to the REE-V, Tiagolr has also released the Gate-12, a cross-platform envelope generator plugin for animating gate/volume controls. Tiagolr says that it’s inspired by plugins like GrossBeat and ShaperBox.
He emphasizes, however, that the plugins, including Gate-12 are not at the code level (polished…) like Cableguys Shaperbox.
Gate-12 features the same multi-segment envelope generators as REEV-R, including the editor with paint mode and the option to trigger up to 12 patterns with MIDI notes. On the control side, it has parameters for the phase, minimum, maximum, attack, release, and tension.
Also onboard is the sequencer and randomizer for more adventurous, wilder results.
Tiagolr TIME-12
FL GrossBeat and Cableguys ShaperBox also heavily inspired the Tiagolr TIME-12 plugin. It’s a cross-platform delay modulator plugin supported by the same MSEG engine.
The engine enables you to create a variety of exciting, crazy effects. They range from subtle results up to stuttering, tape stop, glitch, scratch, reverse, pitch shift, and more.
Of course, you can also use the built-in sequencer and randomizer to go on a rollercoaster trip.
Tiagolr FILT-R
The fourth and final plugin in this free suite is FILT-R, a filter modulation plugin inspired by the Cableguys FilterShaper. It hosts six distinct filter types: linear, Sallen-key, Moog, 303, MS-20, and Phaser. Each filter algorithm also comes with different modes and slopes—a nice, colorful selection of filter types.
You can tweak them with various controls, including cutoff, resonance, offset, and drive, to add character and spice to them. I don’t want to repeat myself, but just like Tiagolr REEV-R and the others, it uses the same syncable MSEG engine with all the known features.
In FILT-R, you can trigger 12 patterns by MIDI notes that animate the cutoff and resonance. An envelope follower is also onboard that can be tweaked with attack, release, and tension parameters.
First Impression
Another great release from Taigolr for the free plugin community. If you can’t afford ShaperBox, which offers higher-quality algorithms and richer animation options, here you get a powerful alternative that’s open-source and free of charge.
Tiagolr Reev-r, Gate-12, Time-12, and Filt-R are now available for free download on GitHub. They run as a VST3, AU, and LV2 plugin on macOS (native Apple Silicon + Intel), Linux, and Windows.
