Initially released for iOS, Numerical Audio has ported its Volt MPE virtual analog Synthesizer plugin to macOS.

Almost seven years ago, Numerical Audio released the Volt Synthesizer for iOS. A long time ago, indeed. It was one of the first MPE-focused Synthesizer plugins for the mobile platform.

Many years after its initial release, Numerical Audio has ported and released the Volt Synthesizer to macOS. It is not a free update for iOS users but a new purchase that offers Intel and Apple Silicon support.

Volt for macOS is the same 8-voice Synthesizer as the iOS version. At its core, Numerical Audio Volt uses virtual analog synthesis with a single multi-wave oscillator, sub-oscillator, SEM-style filter, multi-wave LFO, and two ADSR envelopes.

To add extra juice to the sounds, it offers per-voice distortion with tone and amount control. It also features a stereo multi-FX processor with chorus, delay, and reverb that refine your sounds. An arpeggiator with various modes is also onboard.

A highlight of the Volt Synthesizer is its full MPE compatibility, which allows per-note expression. You can independently control the pitch, timbre, and dynamics for each note played using an MPE keyboard.

It also allows you to play parameters expressively by mapping expression to the filter cutoff, resonance, oscillator pitch, wave position, and more.

To get it started, Numerical Audio ships VOLT with 300 patches, most of which are MPE-ready out of the box.

First Impression

It’s great to see that the Volt Synthesizer has made it onto macOS after seven years. It’s a shame there isn’t a free update for iOS users. However, for the price, you get an AUv3 version for macOS with Intel support, which is also rare.

Numerical Audio Volt is available now for an introductory price of $14,99/17,99€ (50% OFF). It runs as a standalone app and AUv3 plugin on macOS 14+ (native Apple Silicon + Intel). A free trial version is available as well. The iOS version is on the Apple AppStore and costs $19,99.
