Morphoice Unstable is a new Yamaha CS-80 Synthesizer-style Synthesizer plugin with some interesting twists, now in beta as a free download.

Two new Yamaha CS-80 Synthesizer plugins were recently launched. In September 2024, Softube released Model 77, and at the beginning of this year, Xils Lab launched The Eighty. And now there is another one.

Morphoice Unstable is a new CS-80 synth plugin with several twists that make it more unique. Good news: the beta version is a free download.

Morphoice Unstable

Unstable is a new Synthesizer plugin inspired by the legendary Yamaha CS-80. I say inspired here because it is not a 1:1 emulation down to the last detail. The Morphoice Unstable offers many modeled features of the original CS-80, but also many you won’t find many that color the character differently.

There are two synthesis layers. Each offers a CS-80-modeled oscillator with noise, sawtooth, and pulse waves and adjustable pulse width and variable-speed pulse width modulation. Unlike the hardware, each oscillator level is adjustable, allowing free waveform mixing.

The filter section also has a twist. While the CS-80 features two state-variable filters in series, Unstable offers both a modeled highpass filter and a new Moog-style ladder filter with self-oscillation capabilities.

Then, it houses an emulation of the most musical ring modulator ever built, featuring a custom analog-style attack and decay envelope modifying the modulation speed. More spice? No problem! It also comes with a dedicated drive circuit that adds warmth and subtle harmonic distortion.

You can refine your sounds with a multi-effects processor with the effects engines of the DarkStar reverb and delay, plus a WingMen chorus. Morphoice says: “Imagine a CS-80 with something along the JUNO-60 Chorus and Blackhole reverb.”

Further, Morphoice Unstable features an advanced 16-step arpeggiator with variable note and modulation values. Important: The arpeggiator is under development. The interface also includes a ribbon controller for pitch-bending your sound up to an octave. The beta version doesn’t include presets.

First Impression

The initial demo showcases a lovely, rich sound. While I can’t evaluate its fidelity to the CS-80 sound—having never owned it—I appreciate the new features that enhance the plugin’s uniqueness compared to earlier emulations.

Morphoice Unstable is available now for free download in an early beta version. There are no details about the pricing of the official release version. It runs as a VST3 and AU plugin on macOS (native Apple Silicon + Intel) and Windows.
