Superbooth 24: Tiptop Audio has announced two new Buchla modules: the Model 259t complex oscillator and the Model 285t frequency shifter.

Good news from Tiptop Audio. They have released the long-awaited Model 259t complex oscillator for Eurorack and started shipping the first batch to retailers.

The developers say that their most ambitious project turned out to be one of the best-sounding and most capable analog oscillators ever created for sound design and music. I can agree on this at some point.

I have been using the Endorphin.es Furthrrrr generator for over six years in my system, which is also a Buchla 259t-style oscillator, and I would never sell the module. So, I’m looking forward to hearing more about Tiptop Audio’s version.

In 2021, Tiptop Audio officially started collaborating with Buchla to bring the legendary 200-module series to Eurorack. The first modules were rather simpler modules, including the 258t dual oscillator and 281t quad function generator.

From 2022 to 2023, more modules were added, including the popular Model 266t Source of Uncertainty and the mighty 296t spectral processor. At Superbooth 24, Tiptop Audio added two more long-awaited modules to the growing list: the 259t oscillator and 285t frequency shifter.

Tiptop Audio Buchla Systems

First of all, some really big news. Tiptop Audio has announced a complete Buchla 200t system for the first time. Perfect for those who prefer a ready-to-use Buchla synth.

The new complete 200t system hosts a range of Buchla modules housed in a wood-like Mantis case with a vintage touch.

Tiptop Audio Buchla Model 259t

In addition to the Buchla 200t system, Tiptop Audio is expanding the module series with two new modules. The Model 259t is a recreation of the legendary Buchla complex oscillator. According to the devs, it’s in its final prototyping stage.

The new Model 259t for Eurorack will offer the original feature set with a neat modern addition. This can be found in the tuning—the original hat 50% of its circuit for auto-tuning function which was never activated.

Tiptop Audio now finished this job by adding ART that activates the auto-tuning function to the module. Next to the ART input, it will also has a 1V/oct input as well as all original features.

Buchla Model 285t

The second new module is Model 285t, which features an analog frequency shifter and a ring modulator in one module. The developers say it’s an interesting module for making all kinds of sounds and noises. It’s a nice pair with the 296t.

Tiptop Audio will not use the rare analog multiplier chip of the original but a similar chip. It has slighter, better specs that are still made today.

First Impression

As a long-time user of the Endorphin.es Furthrrr Generator, which is based on the 259t, I am pleased to see that the Buchla version will soon be available for Eurorack. The new Buchla 200t system looks very tempting, too.
