Jomox has released the Mod FM D, a desktop version of its new 8-voice hybrid 4-operator FM Synthesizer module for Eurorack.

In September 2023, Jürgen Michaelis from Jomox released the Mod FM. This is a hybrid FM Synthesizer voice for Eurorack with eight voices, four operators, and analog filters.

Ever since the prototypes on Superbooth 2021, I thought it would also fit perfectly in a desktop setup. And like a miracle, there is now the ModFM D, the desktop version with the same unique engine but a few changes.

The Mod FM D is an 8-voice polyphonic Synthesizer with full multi-timbral support. It allows you to play a different sound on each voice.

Each voice hosts four operators, 26 selectable algorithms (DX-9) with different overtone modes, and two multi-wave LFOs with 64 waveforms. Four operators don’t sound like a lot. I think the decision was made in favor of the hands-on interface. There is a 4×4 knob matrix here with which you can program the operators very intuitively.

Jurgen Michaelis’s new polysynth also features analog metal noise that can be mixed into the signal path, making it a hybrid engine. There is more analog goodness.

Like the module, the Mod FM D features SSI2140-based analog filters per voice with either 24dB lowpass or 12dB multimode lowpass/highpass/highpass with adjustable resonance. There are also analog VCAs per voice.

The feature set also includes envelopes and LFOs. The filter offers, for example, a fast ADSR envelope great for punchy sounds. More envelopes can be found in the FM engine, where each operator has its own ADSR envelope. As already mentioned, there are also two multi-wave LFOs per voice with 64 waveforms.

A control and modulation matrix gives you complete control over all controls and modulators. It also hosts a multi-FX section with reverb and dual delay that refines your sounds.

The latter offers beat synchronization via MIDI clock and offers a very short delay time to achieve flanging and oil-can-like effects. Both effects only work on the stereo mix output, not on the individual multi-timbral patches.

Connectivity

Jomox Mod FM D offers a lot of connectivity. Like the Eurorack module, each voice has its own CV/gate inputs and outputs. So, the desktop module remains fully compatible with Eurorack systems. Besides this, it has various CV inputs for modulating each operator or the envelopes individually.

There is a mixed output for the main signal. Plus, two more outputs separate the main signal in even and odd voices. Here, you can mix internal effects like delay and reverb to the stereo output signal. MIDI In and Out sockets alongside USB-C for data are also available.

Not to forget, the internal memory can store up to 128 presets and 118 multisets, including CV amounts. The Jomox Mod FM D desktop also has two OLED displays.

First Impression

I am pleased that Jürgen Michaelis will soon be offering the Mod FM D as a desktop version. It is a very unique FM Synthesizer with a lovely punchy sound.. I’m looking forward to seeing how well the synth is received in the desktop version.

Jomox Mod FM D is available in November 2024 for 1190€, and the module is out now for 990€.
