Vermona MEX3 is a new expander module that gives the inspiring, fun melodic pattern generator polyphony, full MIDI support, and more.

Sequencers play sequences of notes that have been previously programmed. With classic sequencers, you can usually enter the pattern length, steps, pitch information, velocity, etc. Real-time or step-by-step.
Technology has advanced in recent years, and hardware sequencers also benefit from this. These include algorithms that can be used to generate random patterns based on the stochastic system. A sequencer that made this very accessible and hands-on in Eurorack early is the meloDICER from Vermona.
One of the weaknesses of this module is the lack of MIDI. This will now be made up for with the new expander.
Vermona MEX3
The new MEX3 expander takes the meloDICER sequencer into the MIDI world. It’s just a simple expander but it massively expands the module capabilities. It features a MIDI In, Thru, and Out mini jack Type A sockets.
A highlight of the combo is the ability to output sequences as MIDI data, allowing the feeding of synthesizers outside the modular system. It also supercharges the sequencer in MIDI mode with polyphony up to three voices. With CV/gate, it stays mono, primarily because of the missing outputs.
The new MIDI support also brings full MIDI CC support for all parameters of the meloDICER sequencer. This allows you to tweak the parameters of it remotely. The reverse path also works. All meloDICER controls can also send MIDI CC messages.
Another great addition is synchronizing the sequencer to a MIDI clock, including shuffle conversion. Lastly, the module also converts the MIDI real-time messages, including start, stop, and continue.
First Impression
meloDICER is one of the most fun, inspiring sequencers on the market. It’s not the most feature-rich, but it’s simple to use and hands-on. It’s great to see that it now gets an expander that adds MIDI support.
