Erica Synths has extended its EDU DIY Eurorack module in collaboration with Moritz Klein with a new analog Hi-Hat module.

Eurorack modules can be easily purchased from retailers worldwide with a few clicks or in physical shops. Alternatively, you can solder them as DIY kits. This, however, requires experience with the soldering iron and components. This can be tricky for beginners.

Erica Synths wants to help here with their EDU DIY modules. With the designer Moritz Klein, the Latvian developers have created modules that introduce you to the DIY world, both with a theoretical and practical approach. Between 2021 and 2022, ES released a complete DIY synth voice.

A new analog kick generator started a new series of EDU DIY modules in August. With the new EDU DIY Hi-Hat, the second module is now available.

The new EDU DIY Hi-Hat is a new analog hi-hat generator that takes inspiration from the legendary analog Roland TR-606 and TR-808 drum machine circuits.

It features manual tune, decay, and tone controls over the hi-hat sound. Both the tune and decay can be controlled using CV. You can play sounds using the trigger input. There is also an accent. The final sound, then, goes out via the output socket.

A very simple module to operate that doesn’t require much explanation. The included manual, on the other hand, provides detailed information about the circuit. It gives you the theoretical background, including a full walkthrough of the schematics, the used components, and more.

This series is a highlight for anyone who would like to get into the DIY world and know more about circuits.

First Impression

A snare after the analog kick would have been more logical, but Erica Synths and Moritz Kleinen opted for the hi-hat. There is no other product series that brings education and practice to the table in Eurorack DIY so lovingly and beautifully illustrated.

I’m all the more pleased to see that the portfolio goes in a second round with DIY drum modules. A snare should be one of the next ones, and maybe later, a simple trigger sequencer. Let’s see what the future brings.

Erica Synths EDU DIY Hi-Hat is available now for 65€ + VAT + shipping as a DIY kit.
