Superbooth 23: Reason Studios Objekt is a new physical modeling Synthesizer focusing on acoustic/percussive sounds; here is a first look.
Crafting acoustic and percussive sounds with physical modeling synthesis is one of the strengths of the Canadian company Applied Acoustic Systems. With this synthesis, you can design very organic and realistic sounds as if you have the acoustic original in the studio.
For Superbooth 23, Reason Studio presented that companies also from Sweden can create impressive physical modeling synths. Say hi to Objekt, a new percussive-focused physical modeling Synthesizer rack extension for Reason/Reason Rack Plugin.
Reason Studios Objekt
Objekt, as the name suggests, is a physical modeling Synthesizer that goes into the “object” direction. The focus is on percussive sounds, but not completely. Reason Studios describes the engine as “open-ended,” meaning it’s a complete Synthesizer, and you can also make other sounds with it.
At the heart of Objekt are three resonating objects with in-depth controls to create anything from a string or bell to skin or something yet unheard. Of course, a exciter section should not be missing in a physical modeling synth.
It offers various exciter modes, covering a wide range of characteristics (stick, noisy static, pulse…). Plus, you can route via the external input different other exciters, allowing you to delve deep into sonic experiments (for example: acoustic vocoder).
Important: there are no samples involved: Objekt generates all sound in real-time without relying on pre-recorded samples which makes it dynamic, playable, and easily customizable—but also fast and lightweight.
Objekt ships with over 500 patches wide range of sounds including realistic reproductions and new unheard instruments. Further, there is a powerful built-in randomize for slightly altering a patch or morphing it to a new direction.
And you can go even further with the Objekt rack extension by using Reason’s internal CV and audio patch possibilities.
First Look
First Impression
Object strongly reminiscent of the AAS Chromaphone Synthesizer plugin. There are many similarities but also differences. I think the engine is more versatile if you want to go deep. On the one hand thanks to Reason’s modular engine and its virtual patch cables, on the other hand, you can integrate other exciters via the external input and go wild.
Also, the modulation options are more intensive than those in Chromaphone 3. Reason Studios has made a very exciting Synthesizer that I will certainly take a closer look at.
Reason Studios Objekt is available now for an introductory price of $79 instead of $99. It’s also included in the Reason+ subscription as a free download. It requires Reason 10 or later.

Besides the sound quality, Reason’s CPU efficiency is their biggest strength and other developers could take a closer look to realize, what is actually possible!
