NAMM 2023: 4MS has announced a new lineup of DIY modules: it starts with a looping delay and sampler, either fully built or as a DIY kit.

Eurorack started in 1995 with elementary modules—oscillators, filters, envelopes, etc. The whole thing has received a massive boost in the last ten years, and more than 200+ companies are on the market. Advances in technology have also massively advanced the Eurorack world. A complete groovebox in one module is no longer a rarity (1010music…) in 2023.

Today, Modules need to have more and more functions, etc. However, this trend also means that modules are increasingly difficult to use. At NAMM 2023, 4MS shows two new modules that do the opposite: “less is more”. Complex topics are reduced to the basics and resulting in hands-on modules.

Looping Delay is a new 16HP clocked delay with looping functionality. The module is based on the powerful Dual Looping Delay, but here in a simplified version with more direct control. It’s all about simplicity instead of menu diving.

It runs at 48kHz/24-bit sampling rate and can clock sync and generate echoes up to 87 seconds. Looping works at 16-bit or optional 24-bit.

Looping Delay Delay) has a wide range of controls. With the time knob, you can set the delay/loop time to achieve musical beats (or fractions of beats).  This can be synced using an external clock or the internal one with the tap function.

Feedback is also available and can go up to 110%, which can be used to create wild noises. Clever, there is also delay feed knob that determines how much is mixed with the original signal. So you have precise control over it.

Then, you can also reverse it or put it into infinite hold mode. There is also a send and return socket for looping in other effects. The module is simple to use, but thanks to the many inputs/outputs you can still dive deep in looping delayed spheres if necessary

4MS Sampler DIY

Same concept for the new Sampler DIY module. Away from complexity towards simplicity. The new Sampler DIY is based on the mighty Stereo Triggered Sampler but without the hundred possibilities.

It’s a classic sampler with sampling functionality in mono and stereo at 48kHz and 24-bit. You have control over the pitch, start position, length, and sample selection. There is also a button for instant reversing your samples. At the bottom, you have CV control over sample selection, parameters, play/record, and reverse.

Samples are stored on a microSD in the front of the panel. It is used to record samples or import from external sources. If you need instant fun, 4MS ships the module with over 100 factory-ready-to-use samples.

First Impression

I like what 4MS develops on modules. Even the big ones, but they were often too complex for my workflow. These two new modules are welcome releases that break the concept down to a distinctly simple level. Especially the sampler is very interesting and could be one of the first samplers in Eurorack where you don’t have to read a manual book. Great releases.

4MS Looping Delay and Sampler will be available in June 2023. The Sampler will be available for $299 or $199 for the DIY kit and the Looping delay for $275 or $175 for the kit.
