Roland Cloud has today got a major upgrade with two plugins, emulations of the iconic TR-707 & TR-727 drum machines from 1985

Yes subscription, you can love it or hate it. But honestly what Roland is doing with its Roland Cloud subscription service is amazing. They did not quickly release updates (Apple M1 versions…) but also add constantly new products to it. And don’t forget, in the case you don’t like this system, you can buy perpetual licenses.

Today, the Roland Cloud got another addon with emulations of the Roland TR-707 and TR-727 rhythm composer

Roland TR-707 & TR-727

The new TR-707 & TR-727 plugins are the latest additions to the Legendary series of software-based Roland instruments available through Roland Cloud. According to them, they use Roland’s advanced ACB (analog circuit behavior) technology to recreate the famous drum sounds. Unlike the legendary TR-808 and TR-909, the original devices used 15 unique PCM samples, a novelty for that time. Both devices are different in the sound.

The TR-707 features 15 punchy drum sounds covering all the basics (kick, snare, toms, cymbals…) while the TR-707 uses 15 Latin-inspired sounds that take any groove to new heights. Even today you can find both devices in studios and productions. They are true drum machine classics. Now these are available in software form with engines that produce that special sound.

To replicate these behaviors in software, Roland started with the original PCM wave data from the hardware. Next, ACB technology was used to recreate the interaction between the PCM engine and analog output stages, carefully including all its quirks and instabilities.

New Features

The software-based TR-707 and TR-727 also include many updated features inspired by popular aftermarket modifications. Users have deep levels of sound control unavailable with stock hardware units, including attack, decay, and tuning for individual sounds, the ability to overdrive the internal circuitry, and much more. Additionally, the sequencer features include numerous modern enhancements for infusing grooves with added detail and nuance.

Both plugins look great and sound very authentic again to me.

The TR-707 and TR-727 are available now for $149 USD each as a perpetual license or as part of the Roland Cloud Ultimate membership. It runs as VST3, AU, and AAX plugin on macOS and Windows.
