Space Brain Circuits Poly Sequencer V3 is a new portable polyphonic MIDI sequencer with CC parameter recordings and more.
Sequencing notes is an essential part of electronic music. What was only possible with large machines can now be done quickly with dedicated hardware or software products. Arturia showed us that it can also be done inexpensively with its super successful Keystep keyboard.
Space Brain Circuits has released a new version of its poly sequencer. It leaves out the whole keyboard thing and gives you a sequencer engine that you can connect to any MIDI device.
Space Brain Circuits Poly Sequencer V3
The Poly Sequencer V3 is a new portable MIDI polyphonic sequencer with up to 128 steps.
The sequences are programmed in real time using a MIDI-capable device. This can be done by a Synthesizer, a MIDI controller, etc connected via the MIDI input port. The operation has various buttons: record, reset/tie, stop/play, and tap tempo.
Space Brain Circuits Poly Sequencer is a polyphonic sequencer that can record multiple notes per step, velocity and CC data. Various modes allow you to set this in detail. Depending on the mode, it reduces the maximum note polyphony per step:
- mode 0 (Default): 5-note polyphony per step, 1 velocity layer, 1 MIDI CC
- mode 1: 4-note polyphony per step, 2 MIDI CC
- mode 2: 4-note, 4 velocity layers
- mode 3: 1-note, 1 velocity layer, and 3 MIDI CC
- mode 4: MIDI CC only sequencer with three parts
- mode 5: 8-note polyphony per step
The third generation now also has an internal clock that controls the sequencer’s tempo. You can adjust it manually with the dedicated tempo knob or the tap tempo button.
Alternatively, it can receive external sync by using the gate input or via MIDI clock messages. The rate at which the steps are sequenced is controlled by the Division section, representing the number of steps played per clock.
Further, Space Brain Circuits Poly Sequencer V3 offers saving, auto-generate blank sequences, and step override/ interrupt/ transpose during playback. In addition, it offers full MIDI I/O and gate in/out, Poly Sequencer V3 also hosts a USB port for future firmware updates.
You can power the sequencer with a 9V center-positive DC adapter, which is not included.
First Impression
At first glance, it is a nice portable polyphonic sequencer with lots of functionality that takes up little space. It’s neat that you can record MIDI CC data.
