Will we see the successor to the “uber” popular Mutable Instruments Clouds granular processor this year? A new post is fueling the rumors.

Update: After my leak/rumor article on a new Mutable Instruments successor, the topic started to move. Émilie Gillet has spoken out on Reddit, and her answer sounds very promising.

“Making modules” means all kinds of things, that can start 3 years before a module is launched, and several years after it is discontinued and the last unit is shipped to a dealer.

Indeed, I no longer do any R&D work for new modules. I continue supervising the production of the existing line of modules (quite some work in such times when many things work differently), providing support, repairing wonky Braids encoders, and working on all the steps necessary to release the modules that have been designed before the end of 2019 (including Clouds’ successor, whose software has been written in spring 2018, and hardware finalized by the end of 2019).”

As you can read from her statement, she no longer does R&D for new modules but only works on modules that were developed in 2019. This also includes the Clouds successor.” working on all the steps necessary to release the modules that have been designed before the end of 2019 (including Clouds’ successor, whose software has been written in spring 2018, and hardware finalized by the end of 2019).”

You can read from this, yes a Clouds successor is coming. However, it is not known when. Hopefully this year.

Article From October 3rd, 2020

A leak, a hint, or just a rumor, it is enough to discuss it. In the official Mutable Instruments forum, a musician today presented his plans for his first Euroack system. He explained his selection of modules but also where he is not sure yet. Nothing special, there are hundreds of posts like this in forums like Muffwiggler or on Facebook. Putting together a Eurorack system should be carefully considered.

However, the post quickly gained interest when Émilie Gillet, developer of Mutable Instruments joined the discussion. The comment was only two sentences long, but has a lot of content for speculation: “This is a very balanced system. I would just leave a blank instead of the Typhoon and wait a bit…

Mutable Instruments Clouds sucessor

Is the Mutable Instruments Clouds successor in the starting blocks? Émilie’s post suggests that. As info: Typhoon is an extended version of the popular Clouds module. We may soon see the successor with significantly more features than the original module.

I guess the module won’t be called Clouds 2, it will be a completely new development. In my opinion, this post suggests a lot. But always remember: you are here in the leaks, rumors, etc. section, nothing is official. If that is true and we see the Clouds successor this year, the dream of all Eurorack sound designers will come true.

  1. Very interesting speculation! The kind of thing one wouldn’t notice without the proper background information. Sounds like spending time in those forums might pay off, on occasion. And this is added value for those of us with SA in our RSS feedreader.
Many blogs and other sites in our scene focus almost exclusively on official announcements. Some even copy PR writeups almost verbatim. Some people even complain if a blog posts a preview video for a prototyping system, preemptively accusing the manufacturer of making vapourware.
So, it’s nice to get clearly-labeled speculation on a music tech blog.

    • yes 🙂 but she wrote an Instagram post where she said that it’s only a small release before the big one 🙂
