SSL X-Orcism II is a new free multi-FX processor plugin that combines delay, pitch shifting, reverb, and noise generation for frightening soundscapes.
The scary Halloween stories and costumes can be returned to the closet until next year. There’s still a bit of Halloween left. This is in the new free plugin from Solid State Logic.
SSL has published X-Orchism Voices from the Crypt, a free effects plugin that allows you to create horrifying, dystopian soundscapes with a few clicks.
SSL X-Orcism II
X-Orcism II is a new free multi-FX plugin designed for scary sound design. It’s very easy to use and has a small but nice feature set. At its core, it combines delay, pitch shifting, reverb, and noise generation.
The scalable Halloween-themed user interface is straightforward, and you don’t need a PhD in visual design to understand it. SSL promises sound programming without a steep learning curve.
This easy design is noticeable in the controls. You don’t have complete access to the effects parameters. Instead, there are macros with which you can quickly adjust your sounds.
You can use the controls “Echoes, Crypt Size, Howl, Tombverb, Ghoul, and Wail” to craft precise and immersive soundscapes. Plus, you have a dry/wet mix and a main output control. Of course, these parameters are all automatable in your DAW, allowing you to create evolving, frightening sounds.
Nice, SSL X-Orcism II is designed to be accessible to visually impaired users. In addition to featuring a resizable GUI, it has full screen reader support and keyboard navigation, metering readouts, easy direct entry of values, and contextual help for each of the controls.
The plugin ships with various built-in presets backed by SSL’s cross-platform preset manager, which supports preset transfer across different DAWs.
First Impression
The new SSL X-Orcism II is an intriguing multi-FX plugin. Even though Halloween is already over, I think the plugin is suitable for many other sound design projects. A ghost train or horror film always needs new spooky sounds. I’m pretty sure it also works excellent for noisy, industrial sounds.
SSL X-Orcism II is now available for free download. It runs as a VST, VST3, AU, and AAX plugin on macOS (native Apple Silicon + Intel) and Windows.

This is so dope!
I used the original years back for a track and was never able to get it running without crashing via jbridge (as it processess Audio – seems like it didn´t like that).
Now I will probably be able to “recreate” and haunt some ppl 😉
