Droid Master18 is a new universal CV processor with MIDI/USB and the cheapest way to get into the Der Mann Mit der Maschine ecosystem.

In Star Wars, droids helps people in various tasks to make everyday life easier. There are also droids in the Synthesizer world. Der Mann Mit Der Maschine from Germany has been unleashing them in the Eurorack sphere for some time with its smart Droids ecosystem.

Here to make patching modular synths easier and more flexible. The droid expanation is far from finished. Der Mann Mit der Maschine has now released the Master18, a new member of the family that offers a cheaper way to get into the system.

Master18 is a new 6HP compact universal and super flexible generic CV processor for Eurorack.

According to Der Mann Mit der Maschine, it’s a smaller and cheaper version of the initial Droid Master without CV inputs and LEDs but instead with an integreated USB-C and MIDI interface.

The module gives you eight fully-customizable CV output jacks with a voltage range from -10 V to +10 V, driven by highly accurate low jitter 16 bit DA converters. New onboard are six gate jacks with two inputs (0.1 V) and four outputs (between 0 V and 5 V).

Then, it hosts two full MIDI interface, each with two standard B mini jack sockets. There is also a microSD card reader for your patches and a button for reloading the card. Plus, you get a USB-C socket to access the SD card from your computer or to send/reveive MIDI data.

Like on the original Droid Master module, you can expand the Droid Master18 with several controller modules, including the E4, P2B8, P10, B32, and more. These give you hands-on control over the parameters.

Master18 also comes with two great bonus features. First, you can connect it to the epic ACL Sinfonion harmonic processor as a follower of the harmonic sync. Second, it has an integrated tuning device for VCOs that can measure their frequency.

Flexible Patching

The core of the new module is identical to the first main module. It can be completely customized to your CV needs using patches that can be written in a Droid text editor.

Each patch can host multiple functions at onces. You can use these circuits either directly – just like normal Eurorack modules – or combine them internally in order to implement more complex functions.

This inlcudes simple functions like envelope generators, melodic/trigger sequencers, slew limiter, sample and hold, LFO or advanced processors like Bernoulli gate, mathematical operator, CV looper, Euclidean rhythms generator, and more.

First Impression

A nice extension of the Droids ecosystem. I like the user interface better than the OG because it’s more straightforward without big lighning show. The new gate outputs are super useful additions and the USB-MIDI is also helpful.

Der Mann Mit Der Maschine Droid Master18 is available now for $399,99/368€ from the official website and retailers.
