Squarp Instruments Rample Turbo is the successor to the Rample module for Eurorack, combining a 4-voice sample player with audio processing.
Modular synthesizers are traditionally designed with analog or digital oscillators. Many musicians also use samplers/sample players to achieve larger systems or to streamline their workflow.
One that has done this duty very well so far has been the Rample module. Now, the successor is here, and it improves many things. Squarp Instruments has unveiled the Rample Turbo, a new multi-voice sample player with some neat extras.
Squarp Instruments Rample Turbo
Rample Turbo is the successor to the original Squarp Instruments Rample module, released in 2020. According to the developers, they have completely redesigned the DAC, the signal conditioning, and the analog audio path.
They promise a more accurate and detailed sound (especially at high freq), and less background noise when no sample is playing. On top of that, it features faster sample loading and lower latency between the trigger input and sample playback.
Like its predecessor, the new Rample Turbo is a 4-voice sample player module that can play up to four .wav files on independent audio samples. Each voice also supports multi-samples, meaning you can playback up to 12 samples randomly or in a controlled way.
This allows you to choose either up to 4 single samples or 48 samples in a random fashion (4 x 12)—a powerful feature that brings an organic vibe to the sample playback.
It can be used in a modular drum machine where each trigger launches a different kick, snare, or other sample with slight variations. This creates a natural drum groove. Or you get into the controlled chaos and use it as a random sample player.
Additionally, you can manipulate the samples by tweaking various advanced parameters. Available are start point, sample length, attack/decay, and run modes. Plus, you can create mute groups without breaking a sweat.
Audio Processor
Squarp Instruments Rample Turbo is not just a neat sample playback module; it’s also an audio processor. Each voice has its own effects unit, where you can enable all effects at the same time.
You can work with a 6-pole interpolator-based pitch engine, a two-algorithm bit-crusher, a low resonance DJ-style filter, a freeze FX for glitching results, and levels that decrease the gain or drive the signal.
On the connection side, the module has four CV inputs, four gate/trigger inputs, independent audio outputs, and MIDI IN & thru on TRS-mini sockets.
Neat, you can assign the advanced sample and effects parameters to the CVs and MIDI, giving you plenty of modulation options.
Each Rample comes with a ‘stereo jack to midi DIN’ and ‘stereo jack to jack’ adapters, easing the chaining of multiple modules to create an 8-voice, 12–voice, 16–voice (or more) MIDI drum machine.
First Impression
It’s very nice to see that the Rample module has a Turbo successor. The original was able to convince many people, and I think the new one will appeal to even more people because it’s faster and better-sounding.
Squarp Instruments Rample Turbo is available now for 385€.
