BlaknBlu Oscar DSF is a new complex stereo oscillator module with two independent oscillators based on discrete summation formulae.
Digital doesn’t have to be deep and menu-rich in Eurorack. The new British developer BlaknBlu shows with his first modules that they can also be designed in a very hands-on “analog-like” way. For example, the Foxtrot Duo packs three iconic filter emulations in one compact stereo filter.
After its first filter adventures come BlaknBlu’s first oscillator, which is also digital hands-on.
BlaknBlu Oscar DSF
Oscar DSF is a new 10HP digital complex stereo oscillator (VCO) based on Discrete Summation Formulae (DSF) mathematics. According to BlaknBlu, this engine can produce sounds rich in harmonics (partials) like FM synthesis.
Even though mathematics is complex, you can achieve great results very simply. Even more straightforward than in traditional FM, says the developer.
BlaknBlu Oscar DSF features two independent DSF-based complex oscillators that a single-pitch CV input can control. However, there is a pitch offset control, allowing you to detune one oscillator up to ±1 octave.
From here, each oscillator output then goes into another complex FM stage, which acts like a wave folder. Technically, it’s an FM operator with the carrier frequency set to zero.
The signal chain ends with a classic VCA. It allows you to turn Oscar DSF into a standalone synth, using an additional envelope generator or other modulation source.
