Puremagnetik Sage is a new spectral delay plugin for macOS and Windows that is inspired by Native Instruments’ discontinued Spektral delay.
Delay processors are part of every music setup, whether hardware or software. The most popular are analog or digital delays, tape, ping-pong, and others. These are the bread-and-butter delays; there are also experimental ones like granular or spectral.
For the latter, Native Instruments had a very popular one in its portfolio called the Spektral Delay. Like many things, this one was discontinued many years ago. Puremagnetik has released a plugin called Sage today, which revives the idea.
Puremagnetik Sage
Sage is a new spectral processor that draws inspiration from the iconic and popular Native Instruments Spektral Delay plugin, which was discontinued. It is not a software clone because it has some ideas.
The plugin can function as a traditional effect plugin or can process audio from audio from the disk. Once loaded in the DAW, you can route audio into the plugin. From here, it divides incoming audio into up to 1024 frequency bands using an FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) algorithm.
The unique feature is that each of these bands can then be delayed, modulated, and processed individually – impossible in traditional delays. You can independently control each frequency band’s delay time, feedback, and amplitude.
This allows for highly intricate and evolving delay effects, such as creating complex rhythmic patterns or spatial effects based on different frequencies in the input signal.
Then Puremagnetik Sage also includes modulation for each frequency band. This is a great way to create dynamic and evolving changes to delay and filtering for shifting and morphing effects. Besides this, it comes with an arpeggiator with depth & speed controls and a blend function.
The user interface provides a graphical display of the frequency spectrum, making it easier to adjust the delay and feedback for specific frequency bands visually.
As its features show, Puremagnetik Sage is no traditional delay processor. The plugin’s results are just as special and unique. It generates lovely bizarre textures and weird delayed effects.
First Impression
Spectral delay plugins are a rare occurrence on the market. I’m happy that Puremagnetik now has one that is easy to use and fun.
Puremagnetik Sage is available now for an introductory price of $15 instead of $35. It runs as a VST3 and AU plugin on macOS (native Apple Silicon + Intel) and Windows.
