Behringer Model 15, a clone of the Moog Grandmother is out now but according to users and the developer, it has a S&H hardware bug.

Music dealers have shipped the first batch of the new Behringer Model 15. The Moog Grandmother clone sounded great in the first sound demos if it weren’t for a hardware bug.

According to early adopters, the S&H circuit does not work as it doesn’t capture correctly the signals. They have now officially confirmed that the error exists on some devices.

The good news: the bug can be fixed. The bad news is that you must have soldering experience. Otherwise, Behringer recommends returning the device to the dealer if the problem persists.

Behringer says in a comment:

We are fully aware of this issue. It seams that some units have a malfunctioning S/H circuitry due to a batch of transistors with different parameters, which caused this defect.

We will posting a quick fix soon for thoose who are comfortable making a simple modification. Alternatively, you can retrun the unit to your retailer. We appololize for the inconvenience and will ensure it is resolved. Mark

In another threat on Gearspace.com they wrote:

Recently, we identified an issue affecting the S&H function on some Model 15 units, due to tolerances in a specific transistor. We’ve found a simple fix – adding a standard 4148 diode across two points. If you’re handy with a soldering iron, it’s an easy fix.

Otherwhise, you can return the unit to your retailer for the repair. We apologize once again for the inconvenience and are committed to making this right.

A German early adopter, Thomas Gruber, who was also one of the first to discover it, made a video about it and showcased the easy fix. And the warranty does not expire if you do it yourself.

Such errors can happen in mass production. It’s good that Behringer confirmed the issue and that you can fix it yourself.

Anyone wanting to buy a Model 15 now should know there may be a hardware bug. You should wait for a new batch if you lack DIY and soldering knowledge.

Behringer Model 15 is available now for 299€.
