Pittsburgh Modular Snakes is a new 8HP dual-channel gate sequencer with Euclidean pattern generation and other creative features.

Pittsburgh Modular has put its entire portfolio aside in the last four years and started anew. For their major releases, the Taiga, or Voltage Lab 2, they collaborated with Cre8audio. In addition, the company has constantly expanded the fascinating “proof of concept” Safari module series, which provides insights into the company’s developments.

Richard Nicol and Michael Johnsen have incorporated many of the modules’ tech into their synth lineup. Unique drum modules are also part of the Safari series, which points to a PGH drum machine in the future. With Snakes, they now have a matching gate sequencer module.

Snakes is another module addition to the Safari series. It is an 8HP dual 16-step gate sequencer. According to Pittsburgh Modular, it’s designed to work with the Safari drum modules or any other Eurorack modules that enjoy gate signals.

Like the other Safari modules, this new addition is very colorful and has an eye-catching front panel. Snakes features two independent 16-step sequencers, programmable with 18 backlit buttons. Both sequencers offer a large, versatile feature set.

Each sequencer offers mute, reset, and clock division. It then hosts various creative features, including per-step chance, morphing, and ratcheting. Also onboard are per-step gate length accents and selectable sequencer direction.

A highlight of the Pittsburgh Modular Snakes module is the built-in Euclidean pattern generator that allows you to generate new patterns on the fly. You can also choose how many steps the pattern should have that the generator creates for you.

First Impression

At first glance, Snakes is an attractive compact dual gate sequencer with lots of creative extras. It is another puzzle piece for a possible Pittsburgh Modular drum machine. I am excited to see how it develops.

Pittsburgh Modular Snakes is available now for $199.
