Soundspear Formula is an open-source multi-effects plugin with 50 algorithms and the ability to code your own effects inside your DAW.

Effect plugins are available as free or commercially available. Both have to be downloaded and then installed. If you want more than just one effect, you can use multi-FX plugins. Here, you can choose from more than just one type of effect.

For musicians who want to go several steps further, Soundspear offers an exciting free open-source plugin.

Soundspear Formula

Formula is an open-source multi-FX plugin for macOS, Linux, and Windows. Okay, sounds like another multi-FX. But it isn’t. Formula is a multi-FX and an entire development environment for your own effects.

The exciting is that all this does not happen externally in another application. No, you can code/program the effects right in the plugin and test them directly in your DAW with your audio material. Once done, you can share your effects “formula” with the community.

If you’re not a coder but just a music producer, Forumla is also worth a look. Soundspear promises that it ships with hundreds of bundled open-source effects made by developers worldwide.

I looked closer at the Soundspear Formula plugin on my macOS, Apple Silicon. It runs fine under Ableton Live 12. To able to load formulas, macOS has to download an extra coding extension. It was quick and easy. So far, I have only found 50 algorithms (formula) in the plugin, not hundreds. Maybe they are hidden somewhere else.

First Impression

At first glance, a nice free open-source multi-FX plugin with an exciting concept. I’m looking forward to seeing whether the plugin will be well received by the community and whether the number of algorithms will grow as a result. It would be great.

Soundspear Formula is now available for free download. It runs as a VST3 and AU plugin on macOS (native Apple Silicon + Intel), Linux, and Windows.
