Make Noise QMMG, the super famous quad multi-mode gate module, is again back in a limited black and gold edition.

The market is filled with Eurorack modules from various developers, and new ones are added almost daily. Some become big hits, others fall and disappear into oblivion. One that is very popular among users and scalpers (Reverb…) is the quad multi-mode gate from Make Noise.

Since the module has been off the market for a long time due to the cost of sourcing the materials, the prices for the QMMG have exploded. There is currently one online for 2400€. To counteract this, Make Noise is now bringing another batch of the black and gold edition onto the market.

The new Black & Gold Edition of the QMMG is the same as the one released in 2018 for its 10th anniversary. They built as many QMMGs as they uld source parts. So the quantity is again limited. According to MN, it’s the first time QMMG’s have been available in shops for over a decade.

The QMMG (24HP)  is a quad multi-mode gate module that adapts the original Buchla 292 Quad Lo-Pass Gate design, including a mix-out and all the original feature sets.

As a side note, if you are looking for a 1-to-1 clone, the Buchla 292 module is now available from Tiptop Audio and Buchla in an affordable Eurorack version. The QMMG is powered again by eight vactrols and is more than just a clone/replica of the original.

Make Noise’s version also offers additional features: a high-pass mode, voltage-controlled feedback, direct coupling, and normalization.

The latter allows you to use easily multiple channels to easily create bandpass gates, steeper HP, BP, or LP Filters, or even something like a traditional Synthesizer Voice Architecture.

Further, the mode switching on the Make Noise QMMG 2024 is done via analog pots instead of rotary switches, and the bottom board contains reverse power protection circuitry. Changes they already did in the 2018 version.

First Impression

It is positive to see that the QMMG is available again after such a long time. I don’t think this will slow down the scalper market, as the moment will come when it is sold out at Make Noise and retailers. Then, the whole game starts again from the beginning.

they will be available for purchase on September 9, 2024. QMMGs will also be available to purchase at Make Noise HQ (414 Haywood Rd., Asheville, NC 28806) on Saturday, September 7th, 2024, from 10 am – 2 pm (limit 1 per customer).

  1. More like Make Yawn!

Make Noise is turning into a Eurorack recycling company. most of their recent releases feel like money grabs. QMMG: rerelease(vactrols are expensive, but $700 for eight? Tony Rolan’doh might be showing an early onset of schizophrenia), Ch SVR: recycled section of Maths, prsspnt: 1/4 section of Pressure points but 1/2 the price and without vowels. Bruxa = strega.

MN have astutely identified a niche of bootlickers and seem very happy to sell them the same things, repackaged, re-hyped (BUT THIS TIME IT’S BLACK)

I’m no hater, I do have some NM modules and enjoy them. But I also know when a company is trying to pull a fast one.
