Erica Synths has revived the Hexinverter Mutant Rimshot, an analog rimshot and clave percussive module for Eurorack.
In 2023, the Canadian Eurorack company Hexinverter, a brand with great modules, went out of business. Erica Synths thought the same, so they took over the best-sellers and incorporated them into their portfolio.
Many of the popular modules are now back on the market, including the super-powerful Mindphaser complex oscillator. The most recent module that makes a comeback under the Erica Synths brand is the Mutant Rimshot.
Erica Synths Hexinverter Mutant Rimshot
Hexinverter Mutant Rimshot is a remake of the original module. Like the OG, it’s an analog rimshot and clave percussion synthesis module inspired by classic analog drum machines like the Roland TR-808 and TR-909.
The core is all-analog and offers three unique oscillator modes: Rimshot HI gives you classic rimshot sounds, Rimshot LO produces timbres at a lower pitch range, while Clave mode uses just a single oscillator, giving you a brighter, higher percussive sound.
Mutant Rimshot also hosts a switch on the back to select the original and extended pitch modes. The original mode can give you rimshots exactly modeling that of classic machines (in Hi mode). In contrast, the extended mode gives a wider range of pitch at the expense of classic accuracy.
Then, you can route your sounds through a filter with lowpass, highpass, and bandpass flavor options. So you can tweak the filter with classic cutoff and resonance controls. This gives you a wider range of different sounds. It also comes with a decay VCA envelope with a mod decay control.
Since we are in modular synthesis, Erica Synths Hexinverter Mutant Rimshot also has a good amount of I/O. Modulation of the filter is either possible via the decay VCA envelope or via the cutoff CV input. Alternatively, a switch on the back lets you modulate the filter cutoff with the pitch-controlled internal VCO for filter FM-style percussive hits.
There is also a VCF input that lets you blend the clave or rimshot with other sounds. Further, you have a trigger in, pitch in, accent in, and main out.
First Impression
Great that the Hexinverter Mutant Rimshot module is back on the market. The original was very popular, and I think this will also be a good seller.

Yet another rack thing. I really thought that this would be over by now. I want the sound and features of plugins without using my computer. It was possible twenty years ago, and is even more possible today. There are great controllers and sequencers and I want more modern massive multitimbral physmodeling stuff to use with em, cpu power is cheap, so let’s use it! Aside from the Blofeld and the recent high end Mayer EMI and a few others there isn’t much out there.
