G-Storm Electro GODSPEar is an authentic filter clone/replica and adaptation of the legendary OSCar Synthesizer for Eurorack.

Almost every legendary Synthesizer filter is now available in Eurorack: the Moog Ladder, the Oberheim SEM, Prophet, MS-20, and many more. The boutique company G-Storm Electro from the USA has adopted some of them.

One particular filter from the past has no other company reproduced, not even GSE. It’s the unique OSCar filter. But good news, it’s now available as a Eurorack filter from G-Storm Electro.

GODSPEar is a new authentic clone/replica and Eurorack adaption of the filter of the hybrid OSCar Synthesizer, developed by the legendary Chris Huggett.

According to G-Storm, his Euro adaption (12HP) is developed from the ground up to guarantee that it works well with the Eurorack standard. This includes the original core topology, a full analog signal path, the NOS NJM13600 OTAs, and V/oct filter tracking

Like the original, it consists of two filters, each with a 2-pole cutoff slope and with the unique separation function of the frequencies of the two filters. Q is here the resonance. With no separation, it behaves like your classic resonance on a filter.

Switch to bandpass mode, set the Q higher, and use the separation function. The result is vocal formant-style sounds. You work with lowpass, bandpass, and highpass, which are selectable with a logic-assisted filter MODE button.

The GODSPEar also offers various new features not found on Chris Huggett’s original hardware. It comes, for example, with full control voltage (CV) support, including two CV-ins for frequency control, one for the Q and another for the separation.

To make it more advanced, G-Storm Electro also added an active full-wave rectifier circuit to govern the separation CV input as a “gatekeeper and peacemaker.” This allows you also to work with bi-polar LFO signals.

First Impression

It’s great that the OSCar filter is now available as a Eurorack module in an improved form with additional features. The downside is that it is initially only available in the US. Hopefully, this change in the next months.

G-Storm Electro GODSPEar is available now for $225 from its official Reverb US store. It’s currently only available for US users.
