Behringer has released its first synth plugin, Vintage, a free Prophet-like analog modeling Synthesizer for macOS and Windows.

Update: At the beginning of the week, there was great interest in the first Behringer plugin. However, the release was not official. The plugin page probably went online earlier than planned, and the site is now offline. Mistakes happen.

The Vintage synth is very reminiscent of the Tone2 plugin design, especially the Saurus synthesizer. I speculated whether Markus from Tone2 was collaborating with Behringer. This is obvious because Tone2 no longer develops new plugins, and it could be that he joined the B team. Markus and Tone2 denied this in a Facebook statement:

The look and feel of the recently released Behringer Vintage has caused confusion among our customers. Behringer Vintage is NOT a new version of Tone2 Saurus. Both products have a different synthesis architecture and sound different. We are not involved in the development of Behringer Vintage.

We are not responsible for the graphics, the sound engine, or anything else related to it. Behringer has not licensed graphics or source codes from us. We do not collaborate with Behringer in any way.

It is not known when the Vintage Synthesizer plugin will be officially released.

In 2016, Behringer announced its first hardware Synthesizer, the Deepmind 12. A best-seller analog polyphonic Synthesizer. That’s been eight years now. Since then, the company has literally flooded the market with affordable synthesizers and drum machines. The same applies to Eurorack modules.

Software is exactly such a topic. A few years ago, Uli Behringer’s team announced they were working on a free DAW with matching VST plugins. Now the first Behringer plugin is available. It’s called Behringer Vintage and is a free download.

It was in the air for a long time, and now the time has come. The first Behringer VST Synthesizer plugin is here.

According to Behringer, the Vintage synth engine is based on meticulous modeling of the analog circuitry of legendary vintage synthesizers. It is not said which synth was modeled here. I guess it goes in the direction of the Sequential Prophet.

Visually, it reminds me a lot of the Tone2 Saurus Synthesizer plugin. It may be that Markus from Tone2 made the plugin. The company recently announced that it would no longer be making new plugins. Pure speculation, but this could be a scenario.

Features

It features two analog-modeled multi-wave oscillators (sine, square, saw, noise) with a hard-sync function and a sub-oscillator. Pulse width modulation on the square wave oscillator is also possible. There is also a noise generator with a color knob controlling the lowpass cutoff frequency.

Then, it hosts two flexible filters featuring 12/24 dB switchable lowpass, bandpass, highpass, notch, and formant modes, plus selectable drive curves for lush harmonic saturation. You can also modify the routing of the filters, allowing for serial or parallel filtering.

The audio signal path is concluded with two amp modules with a built-in ADSR envelope, panning, and leveling options.

On the modulation side, you have two LFOs made for modulating the oscillators, filters, and amplifiers. The two LFOs are feature-rich, offering separate controls for rate, attack, delay, retrig, and waveform. The latter includes triangle, sine, random, and square wave with pulse-width control.

Besides the LFOs, it has two envelopes, one for the filter and another for the amp.

First Impression

The installation and registration worked for me. I can’t test it because I don’t have the time at the moment.

Behringer Vintage is available now as a free download. It runs as a VST3 and AU plugin on macOS (native Apple Silicon + Intel) and Windows. You need to press on the website “get a free license” and register with the Musictribe community.

Once done, you get a serial number that register in the standalone version of the plugin. You can donate in the plugin and the money goes to Playing For Change foundation.
