ALM Cizzle is a new dual digital morphing phase distortion VCO module with nine algorithms that revives the iconic Casio CZ sound in Eurorack.
The first large digital synthesizers for the general public came onto the market in the 1980s: Yamaha DX-7, Roland D-50, and many more. Various forms of synthesis were experimented with: frequency modulation (FM), additive, or phase distortion synthesis. The latter is best known for the Casio CZ synthesizer.
PD synthesis is also available in Eurorack. With the Warp Core, the US-based developer Infrasonic Audio presented a versatile stereo oscillator last year. Do you prefer a module from the UK? The new ALM Cizzle could be an interesting new alternative.
ALM Cizzle
Cizzle is a new dual digital phase distortion VCO inspired by the classic Casio CZ synthesizers. It brings a modern take on the CZ-style phase distortion synthesis into Eurorack.
The module consists of two oscillators with layering and detuning up to 8 voices for chord generation. The Casio-style engine has nine distinct CV-controllable morphing phase distortion algorithms available on oscillator A. Clever; you can also change the algorithms with a trigger.
There is also a CV-controllable PD offset shape parameter. Then, oscillator B has another set of modes, including a unique resonance wave generation. Additionally, you get “end of chain” ring modulation and noise modes that boost the CZ sound vibe. Of course, with full CV control.
The voices also feature built-in VCAs and various modulation controls. If you prefer rich poly-style sounds, no problem; it has a built-in CV-able chord mode. On the I/O side, you can route the sound out as a mixed signal with stereo widening or independently. So, you have two independent oscillators.
ALM Busy Circuits promises you can archive a rich, colorful palette of sounds, including mellow ambient tones, 90s Detroit Techno-inspired chords, Reese-style basses, and more.
Cizzle has 16HP, is skiff-friendly, and offers reverse power protection. So it is protected if you put the plug in the wrong way after unpacking with too much euphoria.
First Impression
A very exciting module. Infrasonic Audio Warp Core has already brought CZ phase distortion synthesis to Eurorack. This new module from ALM has some other features, and the front panel looks a bit simpler to me. It’s hard to decide which is the better CZ Oscillator.
ALM Cizzle is available now for $349,99/£299
