4Pockets WaveCloud is a new AUv3 morphing granular Synthesizer/sampler for iOS with a rich feature set, including MPE support.
Let’s stick with granular synthesis. With the GR-MEGA, a true flagship instrument will come onto the market in the coming months. If that’s too expensive, you can also get granular synthesis cheaper on your iOS device.
4Pockets, a popular developer of many high-quality apps, has recently released a new synth app that promises mobile granularization.
4Pockets WaveCloud
Granular synthesis is a unique technique that cuts an audio sample into tiny fragments, aka grains, each typically a few milliseconds long. These grains are then manipulated independently in terms of pitch, duration, position in time, and amp.
The new WaveCloud Synthesizer app has these functionalities and more. The core has a classic structure of the grain oscillator, filters, envelopes, routing matrix, effects, and more. You can easily fill the grains oscillator with audio content via drag and drop.
Once added, you can fully customize your samples with classic features like crop, fade, and more in a fully-fledged zoomable audio editor. From here, you can then infuse the granular process and work with a wide range of classic and more innovative features. It has up to 50 grains per second per note.
WaveGlide & Orbit
Two unique features for the granular engine are the WaveGlide and Orbit modules that put your grains in movement. Orbit mode allows you to play sweeping patterns tied to the physical host tempo of your DAW, and WaveGlide is a sequencer with glides and fades from one location to another.
Additionally, 4Pockets added a 3-state morphing multi-wave oscillator (sine, square, saw) that supports the grain oscillator. Besides this, you get a multimode filter, LFOs, envelope generators (FEG), and a complete effects section with 7 algorithms.
You get delay, reverb, chorus, overdrive, phaser, resonator, and 8-band EQ. A highlight is the resonator that you can control with MPE and thus archive per-note feedback and dispersion controls.
Further, it has AUV3 support, so you can use multiple instances in your favorite DAW or hosting app. There is also full MPE support, MIDI CC, aftertouch, and more. WaveCloud ships with over 200 presets with which you can instantly explore the engine.
First Impression
At first glance, a beautiful, powerful new granular synthesizer app. The new Waveglide and Orbit, which can certainly generate evolving textures, look particularly interesting. Only one layer, however, is a shame; multi-layer would certainly have been even more exciting. Nonetheless, a great release for iOS.
4Pockets WaveCloud is available now for $14.99 on iOS with AUv3 support. It runs on iPhones, iPads, iPod Touch, and macOS (Apple Silicon).
