Expert Sleepers Aloysius, a new analog special envelope generator for Eurorack using an unusual EMS VCS-3 style trapezoid characteristic.
The British Eurorack company Expert Sleepers is known to many for the super powerful Disting and Super Disting. For some time now, ES’s Andrew Ostler has been expanding his portfolio withEurorack modules with original analog designs.
For example, the Amelia envelope with has special ADBR characteristics. The latest module Aloysius continues on this path and is no less different.
Expert Sleepers Aloysius
Aloysius is a special 8HP analog envelope generator. It uses an unusual AHDW (attack – hold – decay – wait) configuration, also known as trapezoid generator. You can find a similar envelope in the EMS VCS3 Synthesizer or the Erica Synths SYNTRX/SYNTHRX II.
The module offers hands-on control over the attack, hold, decay, and wait parameters with dedicated potentiometers. The shape of the attack and decay can be independently and continuously adjusted from exponential, through linear, to logarithmic. There is also CV control of all envelopes times.
Aloysius has two modes: gated or auto-trigger turning it into a complex voltage-controlled LFO. It also offers three attack – decay times, including medium, slow, and fast. Expert Sleepers says:
The module is constructed entirely from analog parts and discrete logic. There is no microcontroller or digital-to-analogue conversion involved and therefore no quantization of voltage levels or of the response time.
First Impression
An interesting, weird envelope generator for Eurorack that certainly serves a niche. Good to see that these kind of EG are also available for Eurorack.
Expert Sleepers Aloysius is available soon for £179 (inc VAT), US $185 (exclusive of sales tax), and EU €169.50 (exclusive of VAT).
