Tone2 Warlock continues the success story of the free Firebird Synthesizer plugin in a revised form with new features, GUI and sounds.

If you work with plugins, you probably also have numerous free synthesizer plugins in your arsenal. The quality of these sound generators also got better and better. For example, the plugins from Full Bucket Music are difficult to get past. Sounds excellent and cost nothing.

For many Windows users, the FirdBird polyphonic Synthesizer from the German company Tone2 is one of the must-haves. This is based on a relatively unknown synthesis form, Harmonic Content Morphing (HCM). With Warlock Synthesizer, the concept of FireBird returns in a new form expanded with new features and with PC & Mac support.

Tone2 Warlock

The concept of FireBird is still loved by many today because the engine is mighty & versatile without overburdening the user with control options. This is consistently put forward in Warlock. It features 2 oscillators, each with 84 oscillator-types that can generate up to 14000 waveforms by looping, morphing, and altering its spectra. The latter consists of a waveform/spectrum table and a modifier.

Warlock has a large number of these on board with which you can generate classic but also crazy waveforms in real-time. Plus, each oscillator block has a sub-oscillator, different super saw variants, and ring mods. Both oscillator blocks then move into a filter block in which you can choose between 38 types. You can find here digital types as well as analog emulations with self-oscillation. From lowpass, highpass,… up to many unique ones like vocal, ring mod, fractal & more. After the true stereo filter comes a distortion per voice and an effects processor with two slots with 18 different effects types.

Modulation

On the modulation side, you get three extremely fast envelopes (amp, filter, mod) as well as a single LFO with 20 types. Warlock does not offer a modulation matrix in order to keep the synthesizer as simple as possible. Modulations are set directly in the respective blocks. Finally, it has smart micro-tuning for chords and an arpeggiator with 22 play-modes and 28 rhythmic patterns.

Over 2100 professional sounds are available for direct synthesizer fun. This also contains the original sounds of the FireBird synth.

Warlock is a nice further development of the well-known Firebird plugin. I like the simple and limited user interface of Warlock a lot. You can quickly build new sounds without scrolling through submenus. For everyone who loves the vintage free synth FireBird, Warlock is almost a must-have.

Tone2 Warlock is available now for 59€/$69 USD. It runs as a 64-bit only VST 2.4, and VST 3.7 plugin on macOS (M1 native support) and Windows. Currently, there is no support for Apple AU because there are technical problems with Steinberg’s VST SDK, Big Sur, and AU. Warlock has a user-friendly copy-protection. No cloud, no dongle, no need to be online.
