Digital Waveform, the latest user oscillator by sound designer & YouTuber Tim Shoebridge brings the sound timbres of the Korg DW-8000 to the logue synths.

Shortly before the market for user oscillators & effects fell asleep, Tim Shoebridge aka Sound Mangling is back with a new user addon for Korg logue synthesizers (minilogue xd, prologue, & NTS-1). The new digital waveform is a user oscillator that recreates the sounds and capabilities of the iconic Korg DW-8000 hybrid poly Synthesizer, released back in 1985.

As a reminder: the DW-8000 was a unique hybrid polysynth that featured 8 voices, each with two digital oscillators. The filter and amplifier section was, however, analog and gave the synth a unique warmth character. The DW-8000 used 16 digital waveforms in the oscillators, more precisely single-cycle samples with qualities of real-world instruments. To emulate these unique characteristics, Tim designed a program from scratch.

The digital waveform user program features two digital oscillators (waveform generators) that include all the waveforms of the Korg DW-8000 Synthesizer. Both oscillators can be detuned in an interesting way. One oscillator will be shifted up in tune, the second will be shifted down but only while they are blended together. He also implemented an interval function and independent octave range for each oscillator.

The new user oscillator sounds very good and produces very nice timbres. Unfortunately, I can’t say much about the authenticity as I don’t own a vintage polysynth from Korg. It also includes 39 presets specially designed for the user oscillator. These presets will only work on the minilogue xd

Sound Mangling Digital Waveform user oscillator is available now for $19 USD and is compatible with the Korg prologue, minilogue xd & NTS-1.
