Apple Logic Pro X 10.5 is the largest free update in a long time and brings tons of new features: live loops, newly developed sampler, a drum synth, step sequencer & more

A few weeks ago I reported about a leak that shows Logic Pro X with new features. Now it’s there and the update is huge. And yes, it’s still free for users of LPX.  The new version introduces an Ableton Live style Live Loops functionality that we already know from Garageband on iOS. It allows you to compose music by arranging and triggering cells in a grid using loops, samples, and your recording.

Plus to remix them with FX processors like filters, gates, repeaters, and bit crusher. What we already know from Bitwig Studio, Live, etc. But Apple has also included its Logic Remote iOS app in the development. You can use it to perform live loops and remix FX using multi-touch gestures to trigger several loops or effects simultaneously. That sounds pretty amazing, to be honest.

New Sampler With EXS24 Support

For a long time, we asked for a successor to the EXS24 sampler and now it is here. It’s called Sampler and has now a single-window design that makes it easier to create and edit sampler instruments while remaining backward compatible with all EXS24 files. An expanded synthesis section with sound-shaping controls brings more depth and dynamics to your instruments. The reimagined mapping editor adds powerful, time-saving features that speed the creation of complex instruments.

Use the zone waveform editor to make precise edits to sample start/end, loop ranges, and crossfades. And save hours of tedious editing with new drag-and-drop hot zones. Even better, the beloved Auto Sampler, previously only available in Mainstage 3 is already built-in the new Logic Sampler. It automates the process of converting MIDI-enabled hardware and software instruments into Sampler instruments. For example, you can sample plugins and create unique sample-based instruments, check out my tutorial video here.

Besides this, it comes with a quick sampler that allows you to import a single audio file to instantly build a playable sampled instrument. It automatically identifies the root note, optimal loop points, and matches your project tempo. It allows comes with a slice and record in function that allows you to sample live your microphone, external hardware, or any track/bus.

Drum Synth & Drum Machine Designer

That is not all. Logic Pro X 10.5 also introduces a new drum Synthesizer that allows you to create synthesized drum sounds. Choose from a diverse collection of drum models and shape their sound with up to eight simple controls. Drum Synth is also directly integrated into the bottom of the new Drum Machine Designer interface

Redesigned to be more intuitive and integrated, Drum Machine Designer lets you effortlessly build electronic drum kits. Apply individual effects and plug-ins on each discrete drum pad to experiment with sound design and beat-making in new ways. You can also create a unique layered sound by assigning the same trigger note to two different pads. To help you quickly edit sounds, Quick Sampler and Drum Synth are directly integrated into the Drum Machine Designer interface.

One More Big Thing: Step Sequencer

Apple is known for making big updates and yes this one is really big. On top, it comes with a brand-new step sequencer that we also know from Garageband on iOS. It allows you to build your own beats, melodies, and effect automation using an interface inspired by classic drum machine workflows. Create and edit patterns with discrete control over velocity, repeat, chance, offset, step rate, skip, and tie for each row.

Use any patch as a sound source, including custom kits made with Quick Sampler and Drum Machine Designer. It comes with a library of over 150 ready-to-use rhythmic and melodic patterns.

All that is rounded off with over 2500 new loops, 17 Live Loops starter grids, 70+ new drum machine designer kits, over 1500 new patches, and as topping an original multi-track project of Billie Eilish “Ocean Eyes”. Besides this, it comes with additional enhancements and stability improvements.

At first glance, a monster update for Logic Pro, one that makes this DAW far more interesting for electronic musicians. The complete package for $199,99 has become even more interesting and is a true no-brainer for every Mac user. Not forgotten Alchemy Synthesizer is also included in this price. Nice job Apple!

Apple Logic Pro X 10.5 is a free update for existing users. LPX is available now for $199,99 USD on the Apple App Store. Not to forget, there is a trial version available until June on the Apple website.
