Free firmware 3.0 update for the Roland Jupiter-X/XM introduces a new exclusive JupiterX model engine, brings a big update for the i-Arpeggiator & more.
In the last few months, Roland has released a lot of updates for the Fantom series. Including new sampling options, effects, and more. Things got quiet around the Jupiter-X/XM, which is also based on the ZEN core engine.
Users have had to wait a long time, but now there is a major update. It’s an impressive update and makes the Jupiter-X/Xm more independent than ever before.
Roland Jupiter-X/Xm 3.0
Firmware 3.0 for the Jupiter X/Xm synthesizers is a free update that introduces a new exclusive engine for it. It’s a new analog-modeling engine based on the classic Jupiter heritage. More precisely, it’s a modern Jupiter-style Synthesizer with a wide range of new features. Seen in this way, the engine that was desired for the Jupiter-X/Xm from the start.
The new “Jupiter-X” model consists of four oscillators, each with 7 different waveforms including supersaw and Alpha Juno waves. Plus it gives you independent panning and delay per oscillator. These invite you to create very wide and fat sounds like pads possible. You can choose per oscillator pair between sync, xmod, and ring modulation. Unfortunately, a combination is still not possible.
It comes again with three 3 different filters including classic Roland, Moog, and Sequential types, each with three slope options. Then, you get two multi-wave LFOs and five envelopes.

In addition to the new “Jupiter-X” synthesis model, Roland also gave a major feature boost to the built-in i-Arpeggiator. It now has 10 more parameters in the type settings and another 21 more in the rhythm section. So you can now explore 31 new ones. The handling of the i-Arpeggiator has also been improved with a new mode switching. It allows you to easily switch simple arpeggios and step sequencers for each individual part.
There is also a new option to change styles and variations for each individual part by using the i-ARP and the ARP mode. Another neat addition is probability. This makes it possible to assign a probability to the sound production of each note, and also enables changing its extent through interlinking with I-ARPEGGIO.
Further, they improved the user interface in many places. This wasn’t the most intuitive, to begin with, especially with the Jupiter-Xm. For example, you get now more shortcuts for settings. So instead of scrolling through the menu, there are now individual entries that can be reached by clicking an arrow to the right. The Roland developers also rearranged the Zen Core Tone parameters to make them more intuitive.
Both devices now have space for 512 scenes and tones giving your twice more memory than before. Be careful, it requires making a factory reset. So don’t forget to save your sounds. Lastly, you can instantly explore the new engine with new preset sound content.
A nice update for the new Jupiter-X series. I like that both synths now have their own exclusive engine.
