SetonixSynth Head Banger is a new FX module that brings the Heavy Metal chainsaw distortion to the Eurorack modular synth world.
Distortion belongs to electric guitars like tomato sauce to pizza. Distortions in synths aren’t always a staple, but they’re great effects for adding character and bite to sounds. As with delays, reverbs, and other FX, there are many different distortion types.
Some are softer, others can destroy signals beautifully into extreme regions. One of the most famous distortions is also available now in Eurorack. Setonix has released Head Banger, a module that brings the Swedish Death Metal sound to your rack.
SetonixSynth Head Banger
Head Banger is a new 10HP distortion module for Eurorack made in collaboration with Robots Are Red. It brings the authentic chainsaw sound from the Heavy Metal scene to your Eurorack synths.
According to SetonixSynth, Head Banger is based on a combination of a high-quality VCA circuitry and the most legendary distortion circuit in Heavy Metal.
A unique feature of the module is that, unlike pedals, you can control many parameters with CV, which allows you to achieve very expressive results. Plus, it offers a wide range of parameters for extensive tweakability.
It starts with a three-band EQ with 20dB of boost/cut per band and hands control over the low, mid, and high bands. Then, you can control the distortion amount, launch a bass boost, and work with soft limiting with dedicated Doom and Crush switches.
Additionally, you have controls over the feedback, gain, and dry/wet mix.
These controls will faithfully recreate the classic compressed, grinding Gothenburg sound when fully “dimed,” but they can also provide a great range of saturation reminiscent of 4-track tape and vintage consumer mixers at other settings.
Connectivity
Handy, there is also an LED visualizer of the distorted signal. On the connection side, SetonixSynth head Banger has a mono input and output, as well as a send/return loop, allowing you to insert audio effects in the feedback loop.
CV Controllable are the gain, feedback, and dry/wet mix controls with dedicated attenuators.
First Impression
The new Head Banger module is certainly not the most gentle, elegant distortion you’d get for your Eurorack synth. It’s more suited to musicians who prefer noisier, more brutal, and louder sounds.
SetonixSynth Head Banger will be available by the end of September 2025 for an expected MSRP of $259/225€.
