In recent years, numerous plugins have been released that can accomplish this, and there appears to be no end in sight. With Nostalgia FX, OSC Audio has released another multi-FX processor that follows a similar direction.
OSC Audio Nostalgia FX
Nostalgia FX is a new multi-FX processor for macOS, Windows, and iOS, inspired by vintage gaming consoles, cassette decks, and classic analog gear. According to OSC Audio, Nostaliga FX delivers instant character without the fuss.
The plugin features a retro design that strongly resembles Nintendo controllers. Plugin parameters can be conveniently operated via the virtual display.
Nostalgia FX consists of four sections: Console Reverb, Tape Cassette Echo, BBD Chorus, and EFX module. Console Reverb offers four distinct eras of vintage gaming spaces. You can control them with a mix and length control.
Then, Tape Cassette Echo is an imaginative spin on analog tape delay, offering controls over warble, tape spike, and loop length. BBD Chorus adds warm, warbly, analog-style modulation to your sounds.
The last one is the EFX module, which bundles various elements to transform your sound into a retro Lo-Fi sound. It includes a speaker output emulation, a noise machine, a tune & tone section, and a bit-crusher for additional crunch.
Further, you can find global controls for quick overall shaping, and a freeze button for creative stutter and hold effects.
First Impression
I think I’ve lost track of all the lo-fi effects currently available. Sure, many of them do the same thing. What I like about Nostalgia FX, however, is that the algorithms sound pretty unique. They are not like: let’s take a reverb and add a bit crusher to it, or something like that. I really like the charm the plugin creates.
OSC Audio Nostalgia FX is available now for $9,99 USD on the official Gumroad shop and in the Apple App Store. It runs as a VST3, AU, and AAX plugin on macOS (native Apple Silicon + Intel) and Windows. On iOS, it runs as a standalone app and an AUv3 plugin.
