Noise Engineering Digitwolis is a 4-channel sequencer powerhouse module with configurable routing, quantization, MIDI, and more.

There are many Eurorack sequencers on the market. Each has its own unique feature set. There are smaller models with a good mix of creative functions, and there are flagship models that offer everything a modern sequencer needs.

Noise Engineering focuses more on compact sequencers, but with inspiring features. The beloved Mimetic Digitalis has reached the end of its life, but now its successor is here with the Noise Engineering Digitwolis.

Mimetic Digitwolis is the long-awaited sequel/successor to the Mimetic Digitalis. Like its predecessor, Noise Engineering Mimetic Digitwolis retains the same concept and is a performance sequencer based on a Cartesian coordinate system.

The second generation features four channels in total, and each sequencer can have up to 16 steps. They can be navigated sequentially forwards and backwards, or with X/Y navigation in a variety of arrangements like 4×4 and 5×3.

New in the Mimetic Digitwolis is the ability to configure individually the inputs and outputs of the channels. You choose between modulation CV, pitch CV, triggers, or gates. Additionally, they can act as a quantizer on the external CV socket.

You read it right. The new version also includes customizable quantizers for both internal and external signals. Noise Engineering then added the Mimetic Digitwolis, which features an internal clock with clock divisions, the latter for each sequence.

Internal clock dividers can also be applied to lanes, and sequences can be navigated with any trigger source, addressed with external CV, and/or synchronized to external clock sources like MIDI. Yes, MIDI support is also onboard with a dedicated TRS output socket.

Shred, a beloved randomization parameter from the original module, is also available in the Mimetic Digitwolis. It’s still your one-button instant pattern generator, but now it can be triggered externally as well as manually.

CV and Pitch lanes can have their outputs constrained to any range, and MD2 also features optional slew limiting to smooth sequence transitions. Also new in the new generation are presets, allowing you to save your settings in recallable presets.

Other additions include CV and trigger mappings, as well as the ability to record CV directly into the steps.

First Impression

I have to admit, I never spent much time with the original Mimetic Digitalis. I’ve heard and seen a few things about the module, but never used it. What I’ve seen of the new version looks like a lot of fun.

For me, the user interface and a fluid, quick workflow are the most important things about a sequencer. A test would have to show whether the module is this or not.

Noise Engineering Digitwolis is available now for $385.
