RTMS VAPolyFMv2 is a modern 8-operator FM Synthesizer for iOS/macOS, designed with modularity in mind.

FM synthesizers have been back in vogue for a few years now, thanks to newer concepts that make FM synthesis more accessible. In November of last year, Ryo Togawa (RTMS) released a hybrid FM synth for iOS/macOS called VAPolyFM.

Less than a year has passed, and version 2 is already here. RTMS has now released VAPolyFMv2 and it’s not really a successor.

VAPolyFMv2 is a new modular-style FM Synthesizer inspired by modern FM Synthesizers. It runs as a standalone app or AUv3 plugin on iOS and macOS. One purchase includes both versions.

Unlike v1, RTMS VAPolyFMv2 features eight operators with four spectral-based waveforms and a pitch envelope per operator. Each operator offers various parameters, allowing you to shape and tweak the sound of them.

Alongside classic tuning parameters, it has spectral controls (width, resonance), FM depth, AM depth, and more. Additionally, there is a mixer, allowing you to mix perfectly each operator together with dedicated level and coarse controls.

One of the strengths of the new version is its modular concept. Whereas VAPolyFMv1 had 32 algorithms to choose from, you can route them freely. like in a modular synth. According to Ryo Togawa of RTMS, the synth engine has up to 8-voice polyphony.

I always find that a bit low, considering the amount of CPU power modern iPads, iPhones, and Mac computers have. I hope we can include 16 or more voices in a future update.

From the FM block, the signals flow into lowpass and highpass filters for more tweakability. There are also two multi-wave LFOs and two envelopes for modulation duties.

Further, you can refine the sounds with built-in effects, including chorus, delay, flanger, reverb, EQ, and a compressor.

Not to be forgotten, it also features an analog-style step sequencer, piano roll sequencer, and eight assignable macro controls with global offset parameters.

RTMS VAPolyFMv2 ships with 230 factory presets, 40 effects presets, and five macro presets. Other features are:

  • audio export (linear PCM format (AIFF, WAV and CAF) and compressed format (AAC))
  • MIDI 2.0 support with per note control messages
  • MIDI CC support
  • foot pedal and per-note control
  • Ableton Link, Bluetooth MIDI, MIDI In / Out.

First Impression

I find it unusual that a new version is released after less than a year, especially since v1 hasn’t received any feature updates since its release.

Compared to v1, there are several major changes, including operator modularity and spectral waveforms, which make v2 a different FM synth. I think calling it VAPolyFM v2 a bit confusing because it makes you think it’s the successor app, which isn’t the case.

RTMS VAPolyFMv2 is available now for an introductory price of $5,99/6.99€ instead of $14,99/$17,99 until September 30, 2025. It runs as a standalone app and AUv3 plugin on iOS (iPhone, iPad), and macOS (Apple Silicon only).
