Pubbas Sheepadoodle is a new, free, vintage-style phaser plugin for macOS and Windows, featuring modern twists.

Phaser effects are often used to add movement and texture to sounds. Depending on the application, these swirling effects can be subtle and sound-improving, but they can also play a significant role in sound design.

Pink Floyd’s “Shine On You Crazy Diamond,” without the phaser, would undoubtedly be missing its shine.  If you like phaser sound, you should read on. Pubbas has released Sheepadoodle, a new free phaser plugin for macOS and Windows.

Like classic phasers, Pubbas Sheepadoodle applies a series of frequency-specific phase shifts to your audio. When mixed back with your dry signal, frequencies that are shifted by 180 degrees phase-cancel, creating distinctive notches in the sound.

You can also modulate these notch positions to achieve the classic sweeping effect we love and expect from a phaser effect.

Sheepadoodle not only offers classic controls (rate, depth) but also takes it a step further by introducing precise digital controls. You can adjust the notch count, spacing, center frequency, and stereo width, with which you can explore new, unusual sonic terrains.

The plugin is capable of creating both familiar, vintage-inspired swooshes and more experimental results by pushing the parameters to very high or extreme ranges.

A unique feature of the Sheepadoodle phaser is its built-in distortion backed into the phasing engine. It’s a feature that tracks comb-filter notches. There are two dedicated parameters for this feature.

Anger introduces frequency-modulated distortion to a focused band of frequencies, enhancing aggression and bite. Spray, on the other side, defines the width of the distortion band, dynamically following the phaser’s movement for precise tonal shaping.

An intuitive and modern but unfancy fader-based GUI allows you to adjust the parameters accurately. Additionally, there is a phaser-spectrum visualization that illustrates how the plugin alters the sound.

First Impression

I rarely use phaser effects in my sounds or music, to be honest. However, this plugin looks interesting and is worth a look.  For a free phaser plugin, it offers a wide range of options, including some that you won’t find in commercial plugins.

Pubbas Sheepadoodle is available now as a free download. It runs as a VST3 and AU plugin on macOS (native Apple Silicon + Intel) and Windows.
