discoDSP has released OB-Xd 2 update 2.15 with VST3 support, and many other improvements for the open-source free Oberheim OB-X emulation plugin.

One of the most popular Synthesizer plugins is the OB-Xd, a free, open-source emulation of the Oberheim OB-X. Developer Vadim Filatov launched this project and later discoDSP took over it. They split the synth into a free, open-source, and a commercial version, which drew criticism from the community.

Both versions exist in parallel, although the commercial version receives more updates. However, there’s good news for users of the free version. discoDSP has released version 2.15 of OB-Xd 2, featuring various new enhancements. Attention: the commercial OB-Xd plugin is currently on version 3.8.

OB-Xd 2.15 brings VST3 support to the free build, addressing one of the most frequent user requests. This was also necessary because VST2 has expired as a format; the future is with VST3. AAX and LV2 formats remain exclusive to paid registered users of the commercial version.

Additionally, it incorporates the latest stability, performance, and compatibility improvements for modern DAWs. This resolves numerous minor issues from previous versions and ensures better long-term operation across all operating systems.

The new discoDSP OB-Xd 2 version also enhances the ADSR and key tracks with improved stability under modulation. There is also a refined user interface to explore. Menus have been reorganized for a more intuitive workflow, featuring modern popup menu styling and improved consistency.

discoDSP also added direct access to OB-Xd resources through the Help menu for easier support and community connection. On the technical side, the codebase has been cleaned with comprehensive framework updates, eliminating compilation warnings and improving MIDI handling.

Plus, the program selection restore functionality has been enhanced, and several potential stability issues have been resolved.

All in all, this is excellent news for those who prefer to use the free, open-source version. Btw: the team of Surge Synth is also working on an open-source fork of the OB-Xd Synthesizer.

OB-Xd 2 update 2.15 is available now on Github for macOS, Linux, and Windows.

OB-Xd is a free Synthesize plugin that emulates the famous Oberheim OB-X analog polysynth. Initially published by 2Dat and Soshi Studio, the complete support was taken over by discoDSP some time ago. Since then there have been many updates including many improvements and a commercial iOS version with AUv3 support.

After spending a lot of time in the iOS version, the development of the plugin version has continued in the last few weeks. The new OB-Xd 2.0 brings a faster GUI, a standalone app, MIDI CC support as well as a Linux build. In addition to this, there are numerous small improvements that make the plugin more stable and future-proof.

As a reminder: OB-Xd is based on the Oberheim OB-X poly analog Synthesizer. It attempts to recreate its sounds and behavior. Compared to the original synth, the plugin offers several new features and improvements. It provides a continuous blendable multimode filter (HP-Notch(BP) – HP in 12dB mode and 4-1 pole in 24dB mode).

    • if you download the open-source version 2.15 from GitHub, it’s not a demo but a full version

      • Dunno, the code is GPL3, but the binaries are “non-commercial”. Then it’s a demo, unless you’re savy enough to compile it yourself?

        • Otherwise DiscoDSP will knock on your door and threatens you with a lawyer. The non-commercial license of an open-source free project is complete non-sense. I’m glad the Surge Team folks are releasing the plugin as OB-Xf in the near future, putting an end to this nonsense.
