Soundtoys SpaceBlender, an innovative, swarm-synthesis-inspired algorithmic space reverb for macOS & Windows, free until May 22, 2025.

At NAMM 2025, Soundtoys previewed the new SpaceBlender reverb plugin, which generates reverbs using a unique algorithm that operates in an unconventional way.

SpaceBlender is available now, and the plugin is a free download until May 22, 2025.

Soundtoys SpaceBlender

SpaceBlender is an experimental reverb plugin for macOS and Windows. It uses an innovative algorithm inspired by swarm synthesis that makes massive spaces possible. Unlike classic reverbs, the core doesn’t rely on a complex delay network with feedback or convolution technology.

According to Soundtoys, SpaceBlender is inspired by the pioneers of ambient music, who extensively used layered tape loops and delays.

The visualizer, which shows in real time how the sound is processed, is particularly eye-catching. But it’s not just a visualizer; it’s also a reverb shaper. The pink cursor can be moved vertically and horizontally from left to right and vice versa to create a wide range of shapes.

You can achieve classic decay, gated, reversed, bloom, and other reverbs. Interesting about this shape process is that it doesn’t affect the time parameter of your reverb. The second half of the plugin hosts more typical reverb controls.

Time knob sets the reverb length from short 100ms to a minute, giving you near endless textures. In sync mode, you can lock the time to your track’s tempo, perfect for loops and gated sounds.

Then, the color is a kind of original evolving filter, giving you darker Lo-Fi effects or brighter reverbs over time. The texture control shapes SpaceBlender’s character—from smooth, lush reverb at the top end to sparse, swarming repeats at the other.

Modulation is also onboard. The simple mod introduces random movements in the reverb engine, giving you a smooth, watery-like effect. There is also a freeze button that opens the feedback door in the algorithm. It feeds SpaceBlender’s output back into itself for evolving ambient textures with organic degradation.

First Impression

SpaceBlender is certainly not a traditional reverb, but rather an exotic among reverbs. It’s a unique and fascinating concept that Soundtoys is exploring here.

The sounds I’ve heard so far sound lovely, dense, and smooth. It’s not a sonic revolution, but finally a bit of innovation in reverbs. I wonder if Soundtoys has a SpaceBlender Pro version in development for later with more features.

Soundtoys SpaceBlender is a free download until May 22, 2025. After this promotion, the plugin will cost $99. It runs as a VST, VST3, AU, and AAX plugin on macOS (both native Apple Silicon and Intel) and Windows. It requires an iLok account for registration.

NAMM 2025: Soundtoys Space Blender, aka Imaginary Space Machine, is a new atmospheric algorithmic reverb for macOS and Windows with a unique feature set.

Soundtoys makes excellent, high-quality effect plugins. However, they are not known for releasing plugins like on an assembly line. The most recent is Superplate, which was released in 2023, and there hasn’t been a new plugin since then.

At NAMM 2025, Soundtoys unveiled Space Blender for the first time, a new intriguing reverb that is still in development.

Early Infos

SpaceBlender is a new reverb plugin for macOS and Windows. However, it is not more of the same. Soundtoys describes it as an alternative type of reverb or also as an imaginary space machine.

Soundtoys SpaceBlender creates its reverb with much delay but without feedback. It doesn’t constantly feedback on itself, so there is no building up like in traditional delays or reverbs. It’s an algorithmic reverb without any convolution techniques.

The path you take to create the reverb is exciting. First, you can make the reverb shapes with your mouse by drawing a dot from the left to the right. The whole thing is very nicely visualized with a real-time waveform of it.

Another unique characteristic of SpaceBlender is its definitive start and endpoints. It also has a fade-in parameter instead of a pre-delay. These features, along with the concept of no feedback, allow you to create massive ambient reverb textures and washes without plastering the whole mix.

The plugin is pretty simple from the user interface. It offers five knobs: a syncable time, color, texture, mod, and mixer, plus a freeze button. A wrap function introduces classic tape delay and pitch-shifting effects. It is unknown whether there is an advanced panel like the other Soundtoys plugins.

Soundtoys SpaceBlender is capable of creating a wide range of reverbs. In the linked Sonicstate video, you can hear that they go very into the atmospheric, ambient field. They range from non-linear style reverb to gated-esque to unique stuttery effects and epic soundscapes with just a few clicks.

Mitch Thomas said it will be part of the Soundtoys Effect Rack plugin family.

An intruiging new reverb from Soundtoys. In terms of sound, I haven’t heard anything revolutionary that I can’t do with effects. I’m, however, curious to test the plugin and see how versatile it is. I like how it works and its structure.

Soundtoys SpaceBlender availability and price TBA.

  1. Requires about 630MB for the install on my M1 Pro MBP. Unsure why as the individual components are only @88MB?
