Tasty Chips Electronics GR-1 3.0 is a major OS update for its desktop granular Synthesizer with new features and improvements.
Since the end of 2024, the Dutch company Tasty Chips Electronics has delivered the GR-MEGA, a flagship multi-synthesis/granular Synthesizer workstation, to its customers. The developers had already developed various products before the GR-MEGA.
The most successful, I would say, was the GR-1, the little brother of the GR-MEGA. It is a four-part multi-timbral granular synthesizer with 128 grains per voice and more. There is a massive difference between it and the GR-Mega. Nevertheless, Tasty Chips continues with the GR-1 and has released firmware 3.0, a major OS update.
Tasty Chips GR-1 3.0
The new firmware GR-1 3.0 is out now and is a free update. The synth engines have not been changed. Update 3.0 is primarily an OS update that makes everything run smoother and simplifies workflows.
Users will see many changes in how sounds are transformed and saved. For example, it now features a save popup for quick internal storage and naming of all entities: sample, patch, performance, multi. All this is done with a single screen; only the sample data type will defer to the file chooser.
Tasty Chips also introduces a performance list in GR-1 3.0, which makes loading and saving performance in internal memory easier without browsing with the file chooser.
The GR-1 now allows you to save and load multi-timbral presets within performances, making it easier to create more complex setups. At the same time, the menus have been restructured to make access to performances, system settings, and the file manager more efficient.
Tasty Chips promises these changes to support a faster workflow and prevent unintentional changes or data loss due to security queries during critical actions.
Faster loading times for patches and performance is also part of the new Tasty Chips GR-1 3.0 update same as the ability to shut down the device safely so your data is protected from corruption.
There is also a new factory reset option that restores the default performances reset system settings and deletes all the user data. It is a perfect function if you sell your unit in a second-hand market.
Other Improvements
- performance menu ([Shift] + [Perf]) now leads to 3 sub menus : a list of performances, system settings, and the file manager.
- system settings are now saved separately and system-wide, instead of inside each performance.
- harmonized look for all menus: all selectable widgets can have a white rectangle around them to select.
- high contrast color scheme, and bigger fonts in menus: much improved readability without sacrificing looks.
- Samba file sharing now has to be enabled manually in System menu. This is done to avoid corruption.
- File chooser speedups.
- Removed incremental saves, as inquiry amongst users revealed this feature is rarely used.
- Slightly faster loads of patches and performances.
- and more
First Impression
It’s very positive that the GR-1 continues to receive updates even after the focus is entirely on the GR-MEGA.
The new Tasty Chips GR-1 3.0 firmware is available now for free download for existing users.
