Expressive E has released Osmose 2.0, a major firmware update for its innovative MPE Synthesizer with new features and improvements.

In the last 1-2 years, a lot of new synthesizers have come onto the market. Analog, digital and hybrid. One Synthesizer in particular caught our eye: the Osmose from the young French company Expressive E that takes expressiveness on classic keys to a new level.

Unlike classic keys, you can shake and bend them, emphasizes individual keys, scrape, and more. All this innoative playing fun comes in a combination with the EagenMatrix DSP multi-synthesis engine that gives you VA, FM, physical modeling, and more.

Today firmware 2.0 is available for download with some improvements and a look into the future.

Expressive E Osmose 2.0

Osmose 2.0 is a major update for its innovative super expressive MPE Synthesizer and MIDI controller. First, they expanded the built-in preset browser with functionality and sound capacitity. All this is part of a new preset management system.

Where the initial version could only hold 128 presets, the 2.0 update now has space for 2048 sounds. That’s a massive space upgrade. There is also a new preset favorite functionality and 30 slots for custom user playlists that each contains up to 128 presets each.

Plus, it now has a user-frendly integration of programm CC changes, allowing you to easily switch presets using standard MIDI messages from hardware and software sources. These are definitely features that are a huge improvement for live performance.

Also part of this new preset management system is that presets are now grouped as soundbanks. According to the developers, this will prepare ground for future releases, bring more expressive sounds and presets to Osmose.

Then, the Expressive E developers also added new exciting external MIDI functions, making it a more powerful MIDI controller. You ca now explore the unique press glide and MPE arpeggiator features in external mode. This means you can use them with all your favorite MPE compatible hardware and software.

Future Of Osmose

A super exciting update. It doesn’t stop there. Expressive E also gives an outlook on what will come after the 2.0 update. One of the big next steps will be to make it more user-friendly to tweak Osmose presets. I hope this will be the new editor that we saw at Superbooth 24.

They also announced an upcoming new free Osmose sound bank that will benefit from an upcoming EaganMatrix DSP upgrade (10.35) that will largely expand the synth’s sonic capbilities.

It will introduce a new oscillator type, several new filter models, and improved effects, including a new saturation effect, and improved reverb algorithms.

A bigh highlight will be the new advanced resynthesis engine where you can first analyzed samples and then play them back as an recreation with algorithms in the EaganMatrix. All this is in real-time.

Resynthesis lets Osmose users manipulate an audio snippet using subtle to wild gesture modulations across the whole keybed, like playing a new kind of instrument, promises Expressive E.

First Impression

An excellent update 2.0 for the Osmose and what they have in the pipeline is even more exciting. For me, the new editor that is currently being developed is the big thing that I am looking forward to.

It makes creating sounds much easier and more fun. The editor in the actual form is currently as much fun as solving deep math problems. I’m also very curious to see how the Resynthesis Engine will sound. Playing with MPE could be great sound design fun.

The new Expressive E Osmose 2.0 firmware is available now as a free update for existing users. Osmose is out now for 1789€. There is currently a limited time deal on Thomann where you get a carring bag and Noisy 2 Synthesizer plugin for free with every Osmose purchase.
