Error Instruments Sound Scaper 4CV is a new 8HP skiff-friendly experimental synth voice for Eurorack from developer Paul Tas.
Synth voices often follow classical ideas. This starts with the waveforms, most of which are saw, sine, etc., followed by tuning, PWM, a filter, etc. If that’s too classic and predictable for you, check out the releases by Paul Tas, aka Error Instruments.
These are experimental, crazy, and anything but standard. The new Sound Scaper 4CV is an excellent example of how synth voices can also look like.
Error Instruments Sound Scaper 4CV
Sound Scaper 4CV is a new 8HP skiff-friendly experimental synth voice. This new Eurorack module is once again so experimental that you don’t know exactly what to expect. It’s a grab bag of noise, drones, and drum sounds.
Paul Tas of Error Instruments says, “It’s inspired by some of the most innovative artists in the industry (Alva Noto, Ryoji Ikeda, Brian Eno…). It’s designed to create different layers of harmony in metallic noise mixed with deep drones, flowing by an internal low-frequency oscillator.”
Moreover, “it’s perfect for creating ambient soundscapes or micro drum sounds to set your music apart.” From the description, I assume it uses a colorful mix of synthesis ideas with lots of FM, noise, etc., giving you both percussive and drone sounds.
Sound Scaper 4CV has four simple controls: color, LFO control, metallic pitch, and scape-shaper. The parameters can be controlled manually and by the four matching CV inputs.
On the panel, you get a trigger input to trigger the percussive sounds, a dedicated drum output, and an audio output.
First Impression
With Paul Tas’ releases, you never know what you’re getting. That’s true again with the Sound Scaper 4CV. The inner core is secret; it’s more about playing and exploring the module as an instrument and not on a feature list. At first look, it is a very wild, fascinating synth voice.
Error Instruments Sound Scaper 4CV is available now for 189€.

Probably one of the worst marketing video I have ever seen
Agreed. it’s insane in a bad way
It’s been around for a while no?
could be but seen first at their website as “new” and also on Modulargrid as new entry
OK — it was already available last year, I believe, at Glasgow’s Signal Sounds (and thus on Reverb.com). Doesn’t matter really, it deserves some attention. I have the 2CV version and enjoy it.
