ExtraBold has a very nicely organized and clear UI that is ideal for beginners. Also its subtractive engine is not groundbreaking new but very simple and traditional. So that you can make your first steps into synths very quickly.

The engine features three classic oscillators with saw-square wave morphing, pulse width, tune controls, and modulation options. PWM and hard sync are also available. From here, it goes into a multimode diode ladder filter with LPF24, HP24, and comb filtering options. Filter FM gives you additional shaping possibilities.

ExtraBold also ships with a good set of modulators: four multi-wave LFOs with handy fade-in and sync functions and two envelopes (filter and amp). The latter offers both analog and digital topologies.

Further, it hosts five effect modules, including delay, reverb, tone, chorus, and distortion effects. Unfortunately, these cannot be automated. Additionally, you can find five global unison modes. Not to forget, it offers scale support via the MTS-ESP tuning implementation.

64 factory presets are available in the preset browser that you can play with right out of the box.

First Impression

A very simple Synthesizer that is perfect for beginners. The interface is simple, and the features are not too advanced. Nice release.

nakst ExtraBold is available now as a free download. It runs as a standalone app and as an AU and CLAP plugin on macOS (native Apple Silicon + Intel), Linux, and Windows.
