Moog takes its Animoog engine to the mixed reality galaxy in Apple Vision Pro

Moog Animoog Galaxy is a new Synthesizer app designed exclusively for Apple Vision Pro, taking the anisotropic synth engine into immersive worlds.

In June 2023, Apple announced Vision Pro, an innovative headset that melts virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) elements into a new immersive experience. This has been available for purchase since this week, exactly today. But exclusively in the US for the beginning and at a very sporty price of $3499.

As a music tech writer, I immediately asked myself how these white glasses could serve the music instrument and production world. One possibility would be that you can delve deeper into the production because you have a huge screen in front of you. Another is playing, and Moog got involved in that very early on.

Moog has just published a synth app for the Apple Vision Pro.

Moog Animoog Galaxy

Animoog is one of the most successful and best Synthesizer apps on iOS. Making sounds with your fingers on the touch screen is now a thing of the past. Moog’s Anisotropic Synth Engine (ASE)  travels into the world of spatial computing in the new Animoog Galax app.

Don’t be surprised if your partner grooves around with his fingers in the living room. It could well be that he is currently tweaking synth parameters in Bob Moog’s room in the VR/AR world.

Animoog Galaxy embodies the immediate and intuitive experience of playing a Moog instrument and applies it to spatial computing, enabling the user to quickly sculpt incredibly fluid sounds that live, breathe, and evolve in all dimensions, says Moog in its press release.

It’s not just a simple 1-to-1 port of the Animoog XYZ app from iOS. Moog has created its first immersive synth with all-new visuals and graphics and implemented gestures and interactions for the Apple Vision Pro.

The implementation of the engine is particularly exciting. Unlike touch screens where you can touch the desired parameter, parameters here have to react to eyes, finger movements, etc. For example, modulation and pitch shifting.

Animoog Galaxy has an advanced gestural keyboard built-in with configurable scales, pitch correction, and glide. Instead of pressing knobs, you simply look at it, pinch, and drag to control multiple per-vice parameters.

it exists to redefine how we create and consume music. Combining state-of-the-art technology with a user-friendly interface, this innovative Moog instrument empowers users to discover new synthesis concepts and traverse sonic landscapes unknown.

Animoog Galaxy’s intelligent correction algorithms ensure that you’ll always play in tune, unless you disable it to explore the spaces between the notes. The new step sequencer with probability and smart randomization can instantly help your inspiration with melodic and rhythmical lines, and the audio recorder loops and layers any sound you hear, organically building up to a full performance that can be shared with others.

Anisotropic Synth Engine In The Galaxy

From the music tech side, it is a full-fledged Synthesizer, just like the other Animoog apps.

It has a built-in “intelligent” step sequencer with probability and smart randomization, three DAHDSR envelope generators (amp, filter, and mod) with loop and sync, three advanced multi-wave LFOs, and a 10-lane modulation matrix. Plus, it hosts a wide range of effects (delay, unison, bit crush, drive…). I hope we will the step sequencer also in an Animoog XYZ update.

Super exciting to me is that the app has a MIDI implementation. Besides exploring virtually it, you can also attach your favorite MIDI or MPE controller to play Animoog Galaxy. Additionally, you can go MIDI out to use the built-in highly expressive keyboard to control external gear.

The possibility of using MIDI out sounds very spacey and it’s a good example of the real meets virtual world. I see myself already. All synthesizers are on, wired with MIDI, and I play a symphony on all of them without touching them. Maybe I’ll hit the black keys better in the virtual world.

Moog ships its latest Animoog iteration with over 120 professionally designed presets. A change of atmosphere is always just a finger tap away, says Moog.

First Impression

That all sounds exciting. I’m still very cautious about music production and AR/VR. I can imagine using such immersive technologies as a second screen or new impulses. Assuming I can tolerate the mixed reality experience. It won’t completely replace the real synthesizer. Nope, but it will open new ways of making music.

Moog Animoog Galaxy is available now for $29,99 for Apple Vision Pro on the app store.
